Ive been looking at the new 18.4" notebooks that are out and wondering if anyone here has any personal reviews or input on them. I know the 18.4" will be one very big heavy notebook but its going to be used as a power desktop replacement.
Battery life is not an issue, im just looking for something with good processing power, a big harddrive (500gb) and 4gb of ram or more. I may wait till the fall with windows 7 just around the corner. I have always been a Toshiba notebook fan and think I will stick with that unless something better is recommended around the 1000-1500 price range.

If you're not in a hurry, I'd wait until the fall.
Though you'll get "free upgrade" to windows 7, by waiting you can take advantage of newly released models or "back to school" sales (or post "back to school" sales for the stock they didn't get rid of :p)
and if it's after october, get w7 included instead of the upgrade steps.

As a desktop replacement the screen "real-estate" should be much better than a typical 15" laptop.
I got a 15.4" monster back in 04-05ish as a DTR and it was great. It weighs a ton, but it gave me desktop power (it actually used standard CPU's) but the option to take it with me on rare occasions.
(I only know one person with a large screen laptop--a VAIO, looks like a pretty solid machine--and they JUST got it, so I shouldn't really comment on how good it is or isn't :p)

I'd be more inclined to go with a smaller laptop (15") and then spend a couple hundred $$ on an 22" monitor to add to the mix.
For those "few times" when you do choose to travel with one your laptop, you'll appreciate for sure not having to lug around one of those 18.4" monstrosities.

Well I took the advice on waiting till fall.
I went with the Toshiba P500-02C

Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium
Intel® Core™2 Duo processor T6600
4GB DDR2 memory
500GB hard drive
DVD SuperMulti (+/-R double layer) drive with BD-ROM
18.4” HD+ TFT with TruBrite™
nVidia GeForce GT 230M 1GB dedicated memory.
802.11 b/g/n Wireless LAN, Gigabit LAN, Bluetooth

I had to order it, will be a long week of waiting for it to come in.
I am looking forward to testing the Bluray with the HDMI on my TV

Well after a lengthy backorder. Its finally here! :D
What a large beast. It wont fit in my old 17.3 inch case.
Its a speedy machine though, Boots in 30 seconds.
Very quiet, HD screen looks amazing. I just need to get a BD movie. Obviously with a laptop like this battery life is mediocre at best.
I get 2.5hrs with max power savings.
Full performance is less then 1hr
If you want a behemoth desktop replacement laptop I highly recommend this one.

I could only find one case that fits my 18.4" laptop. The Targus XXL, it is actually too big for the laptop, so I'm looking for another.

Let me know if you find a better option. :)

Oh No, thats the one I was looking at too.
ARGH
How can there be such a varied selection of 18.4 laptops and no cases.
Is it too big that it slides around in the case?

Yes, I even added an insert of foam that conforms to the laptop, and it just pops out of that. I fly to and from work on a small regional carrier and they don't allow it on the plane, I have to stow it in the nose of the plane.

I found a Case Logic laptop case, the TNC-218, that will fit an 18.4" laptop. Unfortunately it is not yet available in Canada.
