My MIL (who is Portuguese) just switched to Wind after being with Telus for the last 5 years. She is NOT on a subsidy or other term contract.. purely month to month.
She moved to Wind this past weekend, and called Telus to port her number they tiold her there would be a $170 fee to "sell the Telus owned phone number to Wind".
She shouldn't be calling Telus to port her number to Wind. As long as she's not under contract, all she should do is provide Wind with the port information and they will handle porting the number and closing her Telus account.
Figured it out.. Telus (customer service) is (mostly) innocent.
Last week Mom got a call from her local Telus store telling her she qualified for a "free" phone since her current one is 5 years old.
She went in and the took her old phone, gave her a new one, and in the process signed her up for 2 more years of contract.
As it is a touch screen phone and she was wary of it, (shes 60 years old.. new fangled doesn't go over well) they said it was a two week trial..and she can return it at anytime no obligation.
She returned the phone, and went to Wind and got a phone from them, and when doing the transfer her two year contract popped up, and the charge was an early termination fee.
After speaking with a supervisor, they agreed to cancel the contract, and will also be talking to the store.. no charge..
