Samsung's new phone is expensive, powerful and ready to please.

Samsung’s new smartphones, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are now available for purchase in Canada. If you’re feeling iffy about all phones from Samsung because of those battery issues sure, it might not be your first pick. The exploding battery of the Galaxy S7 smartphone did result in a worldwide recall of the phone and a lot safety of problems.

However, seeing as the malfunctions were so severe, Samsung certainly can’t risk another big blunder. This should hopefully offer you some peace of mind.

The company says it put an 8-point battery check system in place to make sure its devices never explode again, and some are calling the Galaxy S8 one of the most powerful smart phones ever.

In light of this, here are 11 things to know about the new Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone:

1) It Has a Fingerprint Sensor on the Back

The Galaxy S8 comes with what some are calling a strangely placed fingerprint sensor. It’s on the back of the phone, which isn’t uncommon but it sits right next to the rear camera. You'll probably find that it's  very responsive to touch and that it definitely works well.

The problem is that you might accidentally put your finger on the camera lens, trying to activate it. Slight down side.

2) It Also Has Facial Recognition

Reviewers have said the facial recognition feature works quite well on the Galaxy S8. Use this instead of the fingerprint sensor and your camera will remain print-free.

3) The Virtual Assistant Needs Work

You'll be happy to hear that the Galaxy S8 comes equipped with Samsung’s virtual assistant, Bixby. Users get to enjoy the feature that encapsulates Bixby Vision, Bixby Home, and Bixby Voice.

The thing is, Bixby Vision is said to need some work to really be up to par. Bixby Home is functional and being compared to Google Now, which is good but unfortunately for Canadians, Bixby Voice isn’t coming to us until some time in the rather distant future. No one really knows why it’s being delayed.

4) It Has an Iris Scanner

Like the Galaxy Note 7, this phone has an iris scanner, for added safety.

5) Some People Like the Minimal Bezel, Some Don’t

OK, the Galaxy S8 is famous for having a minimal bezel with a larger screen on a smaller body.

The phone is longer, slimmer and thinner than the Galaxy S7 and measures 148mm x 68.1mm x 8mm and weighs 155g, in case you needed to know. (The S8+ measures 159.5mm x 73.4mm x 8.1mm and weighs 173g).

The result of these measurements is a double curved edge that makes text appear to wrap around the  phone a bit, on its sides.

6) You Can Change the Display Resolution

If you're looking for a very sharp display with precise pixels, the Galaxy S8 will please you. It has an AMOLED display with quad-HD+ 2960 x 1440 pixel resolution and HDR compatibility.

And if you want to save your battery life, you can easily switch between 1480 x 720 pixels,  2220 x 1080 pixels, and 2960 x 1440 pixels. It's all in the settings menu.

7) It Comes With a Snapdragon 835 Processor

The new processor inside makes this phone a very powerful contender- some say the most powerful there is.

8) It’s (Still) Water and Dust Resistant

Like many devices on the market, this one can be taken to the beach and tossed on your towel. It’s IP68 water and dust-resistant.

9) The Camera is Similar to Its Predecessor

It may come as a disappointment to some but the camera in this puppy is pretty much the same as the one installed in the Galaxy S7. This isn't that big of a deal though, as it works well and will get the job done.

10) The Battery is Pretty Good

The battery life of this phone is very good, and is said to offer users about 8 hours of life, providing for a full day of use.

11) It Will Cost You About $1000

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is priced at $999 CAD. The Galaxy S8+ is being sold for $1,099 CAD, without a contract. For more information and carrier pricing, click here . For full specifications, follow this link.
