After owning my Aquos for a year and a half , I noticed something about the HDMI connection. The manual mentions that if you use the HDMI connections, set the output to 1080p on the component you are attaching.
Unfortunately the component I want to attach doesn't have that option - it only has 1080i or 720p. 720p works ok but if I try 1080i, I get a "incompatible video signal" message on the screen. 1080i works ok on component connections.
Now my question - I had thought that 1080i would work over HDMI - am I mistaken? Or is this something particular to the Sharp Aquos?
I know of no HDTVs that don't accept a 1080i signal, so there must be something incorrect in your settings on the devices or the TV (likely the sending device). What is the sending device? Here's a list of things to check:
Thanks 57. The sending device is my Samsung DTB-H260F ota tuner. As I mentioned, its 1080i outout is fine over component and it works fine over HDMI using 720p. It's only the combination 1080i over hdmi that is problematic. Given the vagueness of the Aquos manual (it only mentions 1080p - says nothing about what to do if the device can't output 1080p), I was starting to think that perhaps the Aquos only supported progressive format over hdmi and not interlaced. Then again if that were true, I'd imagine it would be easy to find this out on this forum.
I just purchased a 52" SE and hooked up my Bell HD receiver. The Bell HD PVR only outputs 1080i and I only have it hooked up via the HDMI cable. May not be the same model as yours, but at least it is an example that Sharp does work with the interlaced formats.
- tried another hdmi cable (same result - failed)
- tried the device on another tv (it worked on a Toshiba!)
- tried another 1080i device on the hdmi port on the Aquos (it also worked, but it was with a dvi-hdmi cable).
Unfortunately I do not have another hdmi device.
Now I'm not sure if I'm any closer to a solution. It looks like I've proved the device CAN output 1080i and the Aquos CAN receive 1080i over hdmi (at least from dvi).
I have an older Sharp about the same age, I've been running it with a Motorola 6416 outputting 1080i and I haven't had an issue with it over hdmi. I also have another one that runs the same plus a yamaha receiver and ps3, it regularly swithes between 1080i, 1080i upscalled through the receiver and 1080p. It transitions through the easily.
Thanks wgauci. I'm starting to think that the device is sending something that the Toshiba tolerates but the Aquos does not.
The bottom line is I hope to get more hdmi gear in the future and I want to make sure my Aquos is up to it (and I've run out of component video conections). I guess there's no other way to prove it will work with some other device using 1080i/hdmi than just trying it.
Does anyone know if my success with dvi-to-hdmi devices is a useful predictor that other devices will work using 1080i/hdmi?
I have a 37" D43U, I use to run DVI from STB and HDMI to TV outputting 1081i and the connection worked fine except for handshake issues from time to time. Now I run a HDMI connection outputting 1080i from my receiver to the Aquos and everything works flawlessly.
