Worldwide sales of mobile devices to consumers are expected to reach 1.214 billion units in 2009, a small 0.67 per cent decline from 2008, according to a recent report from Gartner.
Smartphone volumes will represent 14 per cent of total mobile devices sales in 2009, growing by 23.6 per cent from 2008.
The research firms December sales estimates are significantly higher than in September, when Gartner had forecast sales to decline 3.7 per cent in 2009. Gartner now predicts sales in 2010 to top 1.32 billion, a 9 per cent increase from 2009. Sales in North America in 2010 are expected to reach 190.1 million units, up 4.1% from 2009.
