UK firm acquires HMV Canada for $3.2 million

Hilco UK, a British firm which specializes in restructuring ailing retailers, has purchased HMV Canada from the UK’s HMV Group plc. for 2.05 million British pounds, approximately $3.2 million Canada.

HMV Canada, which opened its first store in 1986, operates 121 stores across Canada and is the only national specialty entertainment retailer in the country.

National Film Board of Canada launches iPad app

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) said today that an iPad version of its popular NFB Films app is now available free of charge at the iTunes Store .

The NFB Films for iPad app has the same features as the NFB’s iPhone app but has been optimized to take advantage of the inherent qualities of the iPad.

Time spent viewing online video up 13% in U.S.

The amount of time Americans spent watching videos online continued to climb in December according to recent research from the Nielsen Company.

The research firm reports the average online viewer spent 193 minutes, or just over 3 hours, watching videos online during the month, up 13.2% over December 2008.

Americans watch 31 hours of television a week

The average American watched 31 hours of television per week in the third quarter of 2009 according to the latest Nielsen Three Screen Report.

The report by the American ratings measurement giant is a quarterly analysis of how how much time the average American spends in a typical week with TV, Internet and mobile devices.

Watch NFB videos on your iPhone

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is marking its 70th anniversary in 2009 by offering up a number of exciting new offerings. Earlier this year, the government agency introduced a new online screening room which provides free viewing of NFB productions, films, trailers and clips.

This month the board release a new iphone app that allows free viewing of over 500 NFB documentaries, animated films and trailers.

YouTube serves up over a billion videos a day

In a early morning posting today on the official YouTube blog, Chad Hurley, CEO and co-founder of Google informed his readers that YouTube is now serving “well over a billion views a day on YouTube.”
