Profits for Canadian television broadcasters up 40% in 2010

Operating revenues in the Canadian television broadcasting sector reached $7.1 billion in 2010, up 8.0% from 2009 according to a report out today by StatsCan. This was the largest annual increase since 2003.

Profits before interest and expenses was $841.4 million, up a massive 40% from the $600.8 million earned in 2009.

Four out of five Canadians went on-line for personal use in 2010

The following statistic might surprise some readers of Digital Home but a Statscan report released yesterday found that 80% of Canadian aged 16 years and older used the Internet for personal use in 2010.

In its 2010 Canadian Internet Use Survey, the federal reporting agency found the largest percentage of non-user were seniors and households in the lowest income quartile.

Four out of five Canadian households have internet access

Four out of five Canadian households (79%) had access to the Internet in 2010 according to a StatsCan survey of about 30,000 households.

Among the one-fifth (21%) of households without home Internet access last year, over one-half (56%) reported they had no need for or interest in it. Only about 4% of respondents said they did not have internet service because of the cost of service or equipment.

13% of Canadian households have abandoned landline phone service

Wireless phones continue to grow in popularity in Canada. According to Statistic Canada’s Residential telephone service survey, more than three-quarters (78%) of Canadian households had a wireless phone in 2010, up from 74% in 2008.

The December 2010 survey of about 19,000 Canadian households also found that an increasing number of Canadians were abandoning home landline service.

Canadian Magazine Industry remains strong

A StatsCan report issued today reports that total operating revenues for the Canadian periodical publishing industry reached $2.4 billion in 2008, up 1.2% from 2007.

Revenues at Canadian Cable companies continue to soar

Statscan released figures this week show that operating revenue for Canadian cable and direct-to-home satellite television companies totalled $10.3 billion in 2008, up a whopping 14.4% from 2007.

Despite the fact that Canada was in a recession in 2008, the industry still managed to rack up it’s third consecutive year of revenue growth in excess of 10%.
