Report: Number of Android Market apps now over 300,000

A recent report by Research2Guidance detailing the size of the Android Market has found that more than 320,000 apps are now available for download from the Android Market.

The researchers estimate that, by the end of September 2011, over 500,000 apps had been initially published on the Android Market but over 37% had been removed for various reasons.

RIM begs forgiveness with free apps

Research In Motion (RIM) today announced that it will offer Blackberry users a selection of smartphone applications to help ease the pain after a global service outage prevented users from emailing and texting for several days last week.

Blackberry customers, which number over 70 million, experienced service interruptions and delays over a period of approximately 3 days in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa, 1.5 days in Latin America and Canada, and 1 day in the United States.

Blackberry maker RIM purchases Viigo

Viigo, makers of mobile apps for the delivery of media content to smartphones like the BlackBerry, has been purchased by Blackberry maker Research in Motion.

The privately Toronto based company of about 50 persons announced the deal on its website last friday. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Opera bringing Mini Browser to the iPhone

Norway’s Opera Software has announced that it has submitted Opera Mini for iPhone for approval on the Apple App store.

First shown at the Mobile World Congress 2010 in February, the browser is known for its speed which the company says is up to six times faster than the iPhone’s native Safari browser.

TomTom updates Navigation App for iPhone

TomTom announced today that the latest version of the TomTom app for iPhone and iPod touch (version 1.3) is now available from the iTunes app store.

The updated application contains several notable new enhancements including: map updates, real-time traffic compatibility and Local Search powered by Google.

PayPal Send Money App for iPhone updated

PayPal today announced Version 2.0 of their Send Money app which gives iPhone users the ability to access their PayPal account from their smartphone.

Features include the ability to check your PayPal balance, request money, and collect money.
