Anik F2 satellite back on the job

Just after 11pm EDT last night, Shaw Direct customers began informing Digital Home that they were once again receiving their high definition television signals meaning Telesat’s Anik F2 satellite is now back on the job.

The HD signals disappeared just after 6:30 AM EDT on Thursday when the satellite experienced a “technical anomaly” that resulted in loss of satellite services to its customers.

Update: Satellite malfunction leaves Shaw Direct customers without most HD channels

Beginning around 6:30 am Thursday morning, Shaw Direct customers began telling Digital Home that they were no longer able to receive numerous television channels, including most HD channels.

The source of the problem is a malfunctioning geostationary communications satellites launched by Telesat Canada called Anik F2

Interview: Shaw Direct says recent firmware update a success

At the beginning of September, Shaw Direct introduced new firmware for the company’s flagship HD (model HDDSR 605) and HD PVR (model HDPVR 630) satellite receivers.

Since that time, the Digital Home forum has been flooded with complaints from HDDSR 605 and HDPVR 630 owners who say the new firmware has significantly slowed down the speed of the user interface, spontaneous resets, lost recordings, and missed recordings.

Shaw gets okay from feds to merge cable and satellite tv operations

In a broadcasting decision handed down yesterday, the CRTC has granted a request by Shaw Communications Inc., to strike down a 15 year old rule which required a structural separation between Shaw’s cable and satellite television operations.

Under the old rules, the federal regulator forced Shaw to have separate sales, marketing, and customer service staff for its StarChoice (now called Shaw Direct) and Cable division.

TSN Jets channels premieres tonight

TSN Jets, a new specialty channel dedicated to the Winnipeg Jets hockey team, premieres tonight when the Jets take on the Columbus Blue Jackets in front of a capacity crowd at the MTS Centre.

The pay channel will be available to almost half a million homes in the Winnipeg Jets broadcast region which includes Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, plus parts of Northwestern Ontario including Kenora, Dryden and Thunder Bay.

MTS and Shaw sign deals to carry TSN Jets Channel

Over the last several days, MTS and Shaw have announced a deal with TSN that will see the TSN Jets Channel air on MTS TV, Shaw Cable and Canada’s second largest direct-to-home satellite television service, Shaw Direct.

TSN Jets will broadcast more than 60 regional regular season and pre-season games each season to fans in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and parts of Northwestern Ontario.

Shaw Direct picks up 30 Montreal Canadien games

TSN said today that direct-to-home satellite broadcaster Shaw Direct has signed on to broadcast TSN’s English Language Montreal Canadiens regional game broadcast schedule.

The deals means Shaw Direct customers in the team’s broadcast region, including Quebec, Atlantic Canada and parts of Eastern Ontario will have access to 30 additional Montreal Canadiens games.

Problems with new Shaw Direct firmware leaves some customers fuming

Over the last week Shaw Direct has been quietly and slowly rolling out new firmware – version 06.22 – for the company’s HDDSR 605 and HDPVR 630 direct-to-home satellite receivers.

The update began with a select group of Shaw Direct customers last week, however, it has only been in the last few days that the majority of Digital Home readers received the new firmware.
