Videotron experiences strong subscriber growth in recent quarter

Videotron, Quebec’s largest cable company, announced today that it has registered, in the last quarter, its strongest subscriber growth since its acquisition by Quebecor in the early 2000s with a net increase of 169,000 new service subscriptions, counting all products.

The company, which is a division of Quebecor, had revenues of $611.6 million during the quarter, up 10% from the same quarter a year earlier. Operating income was $275.4 million, up 4.1%.

Bell TV removes Sun News from its line-up

Bell TV, Canada’s largest Direct-to-Home satellite Television provider, has removed the Quebecor owned Sun TV News channel from its line-up in a dispute over fees.

Bell owned CTV is reporting that Quebecor sent a letter to Bell this past April 18th demanding the removal of the station from Bell’s line-up by May 3rd if an agreement could not be reached.

Sun News Network added to Shaw line-up

The Sun News Network this week announced it has signed its first major distribution deal with Shaw Communications.

The agreement means that two million Shaw Direct and Shaw digital cable homes will be able to view the upstart category 2 specialty station when it launches next Monday April 18th. No deals with other major cable and direct-to-home satellite distributors have been announced.

Sun News launch pushed back to April 18th

Originally scheduled to launch on January 1st and then March of this year, Sun News, a Quebecor owned 24/7 English-language news channel, is now said to be launching on April 18th.

Company spokesman Serge Sasseville told Canadian Press today the launch delay was due renovation snags and the need for more money than initially budgeted.

Sun TV News launching March 2011

In a broadcasting decisions handed down last week by the CRTC, the federal regulator has approved an application by Quebecor for a new Canadian Category 2 digital specialty news channel called Sun News.

The new station, which will headquartered in downtown Toronto near the Toronto Sun newspaper offices, is now expected to launch in March of 2011.
