Average American watches almost 33 hours of television each week

The average American watched traditional television for an average of 32 hours and 47 minutes a week according to a recent Nielsen research report entitled “State of the Media: Consumer Usage Report 2011.”

The ratings giant said that American Seniors (Adults 65+) watched the most television, a whopping 46 hours and 16 minutes per week, followed by adults 50-64 who watched 41 hours per week.

44% of U.S. Mobile consumers now have a smartphone

According to Nielsen’s most recent monthly survey of 25,000 U.S. mobile consumers, 44% of them now own a smartphone, compared to just 18% two years ago. In Canada, comScore recently estimated smartphone ownership at 40%.

Young adults continue to be the leading age groups for smartphone penetration. Among 25-34 and 18-24 year old mobile users, smartphone ownership is now at 64% and 53% respectively.

Android users favourite apps are Facebook, Google Maps and Gmail

Aside from the Android Market app itself, Facebook, Google Maps and Gmail are the most used Android apps used by American according the first mobile media rankings from Nielsen.

Using data collected from on-device meters on thousands of Android smartphones, Nielsen measured the “active reach,” the percentage of Android owners who used an app within the past 30 days, to determine which were the most popular.

Four out of ten American mobile users now own a smartphone

Four out of ten (40%) U.S. mobile users over the age 18 now have smartphones according to recent report from Nielsen.

The July 2011 survey found Android was the most popular smartphone operating system, with 40 percent of mobile consumers reporting they have a smartphone with an Android OS.

U.S. Digital Music sales up in first half of 2011

The music industry had some pop in the first six months of 2011, with album sales up for the first time since 2004.

According to Nielsen and Billboard’s Mid-year Music Industry Report, overall album sales, digital album sales, catalogue album sales and vinyl album sales all registered increases in the first half of 2011 when compared to the same period in 2010.

The average American watched 34 hours and 39 minutes of television per week during the final three months of 2010 according to a recent State of the Media report by the Nielsen company.

U.S. mobile video viewership up 40%

The number of U.S. mobile subscribers watching video on their mobile devices rose more than 40 percent year-over-year in both the third and fourth quarters of 2010 according to a new report from The Nielsen Company.

The researchers found that nearly 25 million Americans watched an average of four hours and 20 minutes of mobile video per month in both the third and fourth quarter of 2010

Android, Apple and Blackberry neck and neck in U.S. Smartphone battle

A recent report by the Nielsen company suggests the battle for market share among Smartphone operating systems is tight one.
