Netflix now the biggest source of Internet traffic in North America

In North America, Netflix is now 29.7% of peak downstream traffic and has become the largest source of Internet traffic overall according to a report released today by Waterloo based Sandvine.

The report, which examines Internet phenomena traffic from more than 80 countries, found that real-time entertainment applications such as Netflix consume 49.2% of peak aggregate traffic in North America up from 29.5% in 2009 – a 60% increase.

Video traffic to surpass P2P Internet traffic in 2010

Global Internet video traffic will surpass global peer-to-peer traffic by the end of 2010 Cisco Systems’ third annual Visual Networking Index Forecast.

This will mark the first time in the last 10 years that peer-to-peer traffic will not be the largest Internet traffic type.
