All News Channel for British Columbia expected to launch later this year

Global Television owners, Shaw Media, announced today that it has filed an application with the Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for a regional, Global BC-driven all-news specialty channel.

If the application is approved, then British Columbia can expect its first all-news channel by this summer.

Worldwide spending on video gaming will top $74 billion in 2011

Worldwide consumer spending on video game hardware, software and online gaming is expected to top $74 billion in 2011, up 10.4% from 2010, according to a report out today by Gartner.

The research firm predicts that by 2015 spending will reach $112 billion, up from $67 billion in 2010.

Worldwide Computer sales to reach 385 million in 2011

Worldwide Sales of personal computers is expected reach 285 million units in 2011 according to updated forecast from the Gartner research firm.

The firm projects sales will be up 9.3 percent for the year. This is slightly lower than Gartner’s previous projection of 10.5 percent growth (387.8 million units) for this year.

Flat Panel TV owners have more televisions

In a finding that is unlikely to surprise many Digital Home readers, a recent DisplaySearch report confirmed the commonly-held assumption that households in richer countries own more TVs. Researchers found that households in developed countries own 28% more TVs on average than households in emerging countries.

The study also found that within the thirteen countries measured – Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, UK, France, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Russia, United States – the average number of TVs per household was higher in homes that had a flat screen tv.

The Masters Tournament begins this Thursday April 6th and run through to Sunday April 10th with Phil Mickelson defending his green jacket against some of the top players in the world, including Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood, Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods, who is looking to win a fifth Masters title.

Global PC Sales top 350 million in 2010

Worldwide PC shipments totalled 350.9 million units in 2010 according to preliminary data released this month by Gartner. The numbers include desktop and mobile computers, including mini-notebooks but not media tablet such as the iPad.

Sales were up 13.8% over the 308.3 million units shipped in 2009. Despite the strong increase for the year, sales in the final quarter of the year were 93.5 million, up just 3.1% from the same quarter of 2009 and well below Gartner’s earlier forecast of 4.8 percent growth for the quarter.

Goodbye Canwest, Hello Shaw Media

After receiving final approval from the CRTC last Friday, Shaw Communications today will complete the purchase of the bankrupt Canwest Global television properties.

Canwest entered creditor bankruptcy protection in late 2009, leading to the sale of the company’s assets to Shaw in a deal announced this past May.
