Survey finds bigger is better when it comes to HDTV

A new Canadian survey confirms what Digital Home readers already know, that bigger is indeed better when it comes to high definition televisions (HDTV).

The Sharp Canada sponsored survey of just over 1,000 Canadians found that a larger screen size was the number one feature respondents wished their television had (24 per cent) and that a majority (54 per cent) wanted a television that was 50 inches or larger.

Flat Panel TV owners have more televisions

In a finding that is unlikely to surprise many Digital Home readers, a recent DisplaySearch report confirmed the commonly-held assumption that households in richer countries own more TVs. Researchers found that households in developed countries own 28% more TVs on average than households in emerging countries.

The study also found that within the thirteen countries measured – Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, UK, France, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Russia, United States – the average number of TVs per household was higher in homes that had a flat screen tv.

Flat panel televisions increasingly more energy efficient

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) this week released a study which shows how much more energy efficient flat panel televisions are today than six or seven years ago.

The report, produced by research firm TIAX LLC, reviewed power consumption data on best-selling high-definition liquid crystal (LCD) and plasma display models produced between 2003 and 2010. The report examined active and standby power consumption in models with screen sizes ranging from 13- to 65-inches.

Sales of Internet enabled televisions on the rise

More than one quarter of all televisions purchased by American consumers in January were linked to the internet according to a new survey by iSuppli.

The research firm surveyed 800 consumers and found that 27.5% had connected their new TVs to the Web, either through the internal capabilities of their sets or through an external device, such as a media extender or video game console.
