Shaw launches broadband WiFi network trial

Shaw Communications today announced it has begun consumer trials of its broadband wireless network using WiFi technology.

The company says Shaw High Speed Internet customers can trial the service at a limited number of locations, including malls, restaurants and fitness facilities, in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.

Distributel now offering cable internet service in Western Canada

Third Party Internet Access provider Distributel Communications announced today that its now offering high-speed Internet services in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Richmond and Surrey.

Distributel has been offering Internet and telecommunications services in Ontario and Quebec since September of this year. Prior to September the company operated for many years under the 3Web, CIA, Cyberus and Cybersurf brand name.

Mobilicity now available at 50 Walmart Canada stores

Mobilicity today announced a distribution agreement with Walmart Canada which would see the firm`s wireless phones and airtime bundles sold in approximately 50 Walmart stores across Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

Today’s announcement complements Mobilicity’s existing retail distribution channel and Mobilicity stores across the five markets in which it operates.

Shaw breaks ground on new data centre in Calgary

Shaw Communications announced today it was breaking ground on a new energy efficient data centre in Calgary, Alberta which will be used to increase Shaw’s broadband internet capacity.

Expected to be completed by 2014, the center is expected to achieve LEED certification by employing a number of green building technologies such as “free cooling.”

Terry Dimonte returns to Montreal’s Chom 97.7 FM

Montreal’s mainstream rock station CHOM 97.7 FM announced today the impending return of Terry DiMonte from Q107 in Calgary to its morning show.

The Montreal native returns to a chair he first occupied in 1984 after spending just under four years in Calgary.

MIX FM Calgary is now UP! FM

Rawlco Radio, operaters of fifteen radio stations across Alberta and Saskatchewan, have rebranded Mix FM in Calgary to UP! 97.7 FM. The stations call letters are also changing from CHMC-FM to CIUP-FM.

CIUP-FM’s format changes from Adult Hits to what Rawlco calls “up beat,” a format Rawlco sucessfully adopted with one of its FM stations in Edmonton last October.

Shaw Gateway television system launches in Calgary

In Calgary last week, without any fanfare, Shaw Cable launched the Shaw Gateway made by Arris which offers Shaw digital cable customers a Whole Home High Definition Personal Video Recording (HD PVR) solution.

At the heart of the system is the Gateway, a digital set top box type device which connects to the cable coming into your home and acts as a server or central hub to the rest of the system.
