Roku 2 Media Streamers go on-sale at the end of July

California based Roku this week announced its next generation of energy efficient media streaming devices designed to compete with the likes of Apple TV, Boxee TV, WDTV Live and LG SmartTV Upgrader.

Roku 2, which uses just two watts of power, will be available in three models: Roku 2 HD, Roku 2 XD and Roku 2 XS which will be priced at $59.99, $79.99 and $99.99 respectively.

New Apple TV sales expected to top one million by Xmas

Apple said today that it expects to have sold one million units of its second generation Apple TV (ATV) by the end of this week. Apple began selling the devices on the company website on September 1st.

The revamped device, which sells for $119 in Canada, gives users in Canada the ability to rent HD movies from the iTunes store or the ability to stream music, photos and videos from a Windows PC or Apple Mac.

Apple TV sales top 250,000 units

During a fiscal earnings call earlier this week, Apple CEO Steve Jobs earlier this week noted that the new Apple TV has sold more than 250,00 units since it went on sale in September.

After months of rumours, Apple yesterday announced the new Apple TV, a slimmed down device which will give users in Canada and the U.S. the ability to rent HD movies from the iTunes store. Users in the U.S. will also have the ability to rent select HD shows from ABC, Fox and BBC America.

Apple says the new device will also let users stream content from Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe, as well as music, photos and videos from a Windows PC or Apple Mac.

D-Link announces the Boxee Box

At CES 2010 in Las Vegas, D-Link has introduced the new Boxee Box, winner of the CES Best of Innovations award in the Home Entertainment category.

The Boxee Box is a digital media extender which runs Boxee a popular PC, Mac, and Linux media center program that lets users watch popular TV shows and movies.

iTunes 9.0.2 Released

In addition to the release of Apple TV Software 3.0 today, Apple has also updated iTunes to version 9.0.2.

The latest version of iTunes adds support for Apple TV software version 3.0, adds an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improved support for accessibility.

Apple TV 3.0 includes internet radio support

Apple today introduced new firmware for Apple TV featuring a redesigned main menu which the company says will make navigating faster and simpler.

Additional features of Apple TV Software 3.0 include the ability to listen to Internet radio through your home theater system, the addition of Genius mixes and the ability to view iTunes Extras and iTunes LP.
