News talk AM Radio station approved for Mississauga

In a broadcast decision handed down today, the CRTC has approved an application by Elliot Kerr to operate an English-language commercial AM radio station in Mississauga, Ontario.

In his application, Mr. Kerr said the new station would offer a news/talk format dedicated to Mississauga. The station would provide residents with local news and information, including coverage of city council, local business issues, and community related political and social events.

Bell Media Radio signs broadcast extension with the Vancouver Canucks

Bell Media’s Team 1040 (CKST) radio station and the Vancouver Canucks announced this week a new broadcast deal which gives the station radio rights to all Canucks games through to the 2016-17 season.

The all-sports radio station has been the home of the Canucks Radio Network since 2006.

Dan Dunleavy joins Talk Radio AM640 for Leafs broadcasts

Talk Radio AM640 and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment have announced that Dan Dunleavy will join the station’s Maple Leaf broadcast team effective Monday, September 19, 2011.

Dunleavy will share play-by-play duties with Joe Bowen, host all pre-game shows when the Maple Leafs are on home ice, as well as guest host on Leafs Breakfast.

New Montreal Radio station is all-traffic all the time

This morning at 4:30 am, Cogeco launched a new French language AM radio station devoted entirely to traffic reports and coverage of current roadwork in the Greater Montréal Area.

Radio Circulation 730 will be on air 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so that listeners from now on can keep informed at any time about the situation on roads and streets, barriers and obstacles, road closures and other conditions.

Team 990 picks John Bartlett as voice of the Canadiens

Montreal’s CKGM, better known as Team 990, announced today that it has chosen John Bartlett to be the voice of the Montreal Canadiens. Bartlett will call play-by-play for the station’s full slate of games.
Back in June, the station became the voice of the Montreal Canadiens with exclusive English radio broadcast rights to all of the team’s games over the next seven seasons.

Aaron Rand taking over afternoon drive at CJAD 800 AM in Montreal

Just three months after he left the Q (CFQR), Aaron Rand is returning to CJAD 800 AM in Montreal. Rand was previously at CJAD in 1979 and 1980 as a sportscaster.

The 33-year veteran of English language radio will kick off his new show on September 6th. Rand will host the afternoon drive show which airs weekdays from 3 to 7 PM.

Rogers Launches SONiC radio in BC

Rogers Radio today relaunched CFUN-FM in Chilliwack British Columbia as SONic radio at 8:35 a.m. Pacific time.

Officially licenced to Chilliwack, the Top 40 music station operates at 107.5 FM in Chilliwack, Sonic will also be rebroadcast on 92.5 FM in Abbotsford, and on 104.9 FM in Vancouver.

U.S. Digital Music sales up in first half of 2011

The music industry had some pop in the first six months of 2011, with album sales up for the first time since 2004.

According to Nielsen and Billboard’s Mid-year Music Industry Report, overall album sales, digital album sales, catalogue album sales and vinyl album sales all registered increases in the first half of 2011 when compared to the same period in 2010.
