Can you get the EEE with 2, or hopefully 3 gigs of RAM? I figure that more RAM ==> less swapping ==> less power consumption by the drive ==> longer battery life.

Given that chunks of XP, and quite a few apps, MUST install on C:, I doubt that would work. If it did, MS would already have XP functional on the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child).
