Cell phone spam
 
Got my first call from 000-000-0000 on my cell today. I did not wait around to see which cruise I won.

Instead I called Bell Mobility (makes you wish for Aliant Mobility) to explain that I was not interested in paying a charge for spam. The CSR indicated there was no charge for this call but there would be no way to reverse the charge had there been. Her solution was to register on the national Do-Not-Call list. Been there the first day.

In response to my statement that the list is ineffective outside Canada and that customers are on the hook for charges she kept to her script about the Do-Not-Call list.

The e-mails to Bell and Aliant have started.

I received the same call on my Rogers cell phone yesterday and then, a few hours later, on my work phone. Seems like they are stepping up their efforts to get people to sign up.

I don't think that it makes sense to blame Bell/Rogers or whomever for this. It is not their fault that someone can make a phone call to our numbers, unless they are actively providing our numbers to these people. However, I suspect that these guys are just calling all possible phone numbers.

I've registered my numbers on the Do Not Call list, and continue to receive the 000-000-0000 calls. I don't answer. How can you even report that number?

You cannot. The number doesn't exist. The telemarketer blocks their caller ID, and with some methods the result is that the receiver (you) sees all zeroes. It's not a real number so you can't report that number.

These telemarketers call from the U.S., so they are not bound by our Do Not Call list or legislation.

Consider this. The DNCL is distributed to these very same telemarketers. What do you suppose they do with this goldmine of information they cannot use? Sell to the highest bidder? Set up a call centre in the US and use the list? I don't know but I suspect something like that is happening.

That's exactly why I'm not on the DNC list. Just use my Caller ID and Number blocking function in my home phone.

I was informed that cell numbers will not automatically de-register when you call the above numbers... you have to stay on the line and wait for an actual live operator so they can do it for you.

And here is some interesting info from the operator I talked to the other day. They told me that around half of Canada has already received these calls (the ones with the free cruise/trip), and that since the "Do not call list" was started, almost all the complaints so far have been about the same company (they called them the "fog horn" company because of the way the call starts off).

For me, I only started to receive more spam calls after I registered (the latest one was this morning). Hopefully I'll see a drop or stop in these types of calls over the next few months now that I have de-registered my number(s). (cross fingers)

If you have call display and see 000-000-0000 just don't answer to call.

Yeah that's my screening method on my cell.

I also don't answer any 1-800 number, or any area code that I don't recognize, or can't think of a reason I'd be getting a call from...

If it's someone actually trying to reach me they'll leave a message.

Could you set up an address book entry for the number, then assign it "silence" as the ring tone? I've done that with a regular phone number in the past, but not the 000 number.

i had an interesting call from one of these "you've won a trip" companies several years ago.

i pressed the button to claim my prize. when the agent got on the phone they asked for a credit card number to get the process started. then i played along like i was really excited and started to give the first couple numbers. then i said, "wait a minute. i'm giving you my credit card number but i don't know anything about you" and started pressing for a proper phone number and address. the agent actually started giving me the information, then the phone went dead. very suspicious.

now we just ignore these calls.

Pesky PREMIUM TEXTING
 
One of the most pesky scams are PREMIUM TEXT MESSAGES. I received hundreds of them on my FIDO phone and could not stop them. Silly horoscopes and quotes were waking me up, interrupting conferences and billing me $2 each. Answering them with STOP IT or DROP DEAD, did not help. Calls to Customer Service gave me credit just for one month.
Calling Customer Service is often just a hearing test, memory test, keabording skills test and loyalty test. Loyalty is always to the Company they work for. I presume that arbitrary statement that anyting typed to the Company terminal is the truth and a total truth is not an evidence in Canadian Courts.
Registered letter to FIDO and a local BBB did help. I was even promised a refund from the offending fraudster, in 4 weeks they said. We will see.

Can you get FIDO to...
  • either restrict text messages to a specific "white list" of numbers
  • or not allow "premium" messages (if they are somehow distinguishable)
  • or simply shut off texting to your account altogether
