my phone goes into roaming at home

Hi I am a new Virgin Mobile customer in Winnipeg Manitoba. And on my phone some places in the house it says 1x well others it says analouge. Will I be charged when it says analouge and I recieve or make calls. thanks

Analog service has nothing to do with roaming. Roaming is when you are using an non-Canadian tower. There is no difference in billing when using analog. If you can, you may want to switch your phone to digital service only to prevent it from switching to analog at all. I've found that in weak service areas if you lock your phone to digital you'll actually have better reception. Just because the phone wants to switch to analog, doesn't mean it will give a usable signal.

people still use analogue?

Where I am there is more analog coverage than digital (Red Lake in Northwestern Ontario). I guess the poor sound quality and horrible battery life beats the "no signal" that rogers gives. If I had a GSM phone I would have to drive 3 hours to get a signal.

TBTel is upgrading the network slowly, and I'm sure someday they will be all digital and rogers will still have no coverage.

well rogers took down all analogue coverage, and replaced it with gsm (digital) and wcdma (3g) in all of its footprint. So you can now get a digital signal further away from the tower where you could with an analogue amps handset, but they may not have coverage where TBT Tel's footprint exists, YET.. but hey, theyve expanded so fast, they are gonan have to be there someday..

Roaming is the ability to use your cell phone outside your usual service area – when traveling outside of the "home" service area defined by a service provider. So it isn't necessarly when you are using a non-Canadian tower.

You're right, I should have said that you only have to worry about getting charged for roaming when you're using a non-Canadian tower.

They do not have 3G in all of their footprint. They have edge throughout the network but 3G is only in urban areas.

In Northern Ontario rogers has more holes than swiss cheese and they haven't bothered to improve it so I'm not going to hold my breath for it to change.
