Shaw Cellular

So it looks like one of Shaw's priorities is a Cellular service my question is do you think they will:

1) Spend Billion to put up towers all across BC/AB/SK/MB/Part of ON/
2) Look at different technology such as satellite phones
3) Make a deal with Rogers service like Videotron did.

Anyways, this has gotten me thinking and I want to know your members opinions and ideas on the subject

they'll become a MNVO and piggy back off Rogers's cell towers.

So why do you think Shaw`s plans and priorities are cellular? It would be good, the more the merryier. Shaw likes control distrubution, control of the technology etc, as you put it, hudge bucks to put up towers. I just don`t see that.
But maybe they will piggy back with a national carrier, or just set up in the big cities.....interesting. Paolo what is MNVO?

westmanguy 2006-11-05 01:08 AM

thats what I said a national deal with Rogers......... put up towers in key cities (Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg) and get coverage deal from Rogers.

canada45 2006-11-05 01:55 AM

So my question is, where did you get the idea, notion that Shaw is interested in Cell service? Corperate website, interview with a senior Shaw manager etc?

MNVO, Mobile Network Virtual Operator

Shaw monopoly attitude

Shaw just wants the complete package to compete with Telus. I am considering switching to Telus once I see whether their TV can reduce my high (& increasing) Shaw SD cable costs.

OTOH I am already a Rogers mobile client, so if I can convert that to a Shaw bundle and save money, maybe I will stay with them (but I doubt it).

They can't just "put up towers", to do that you need a license. I don't believe Industry Canada has any desire to re-open that. If Shaw wants to offer cellular service then they have to do it within the existing framework, in other words re-sell someone else's service. To me, the obvious candidate is Rogers.

Ahh, maybe because Jim Shaw keeps saying they are going to do it.

Back to topic...

Shaw could get into bed with either Rogers or Bell. (just not Telus) as an MNVO the way Videotron went with Rogers.

westmanguy 2006-11-06 05:55 PM

Yes Bell would work also the only place they compete is Kenora - Dryden. Thunder Bay has thier own telco TBtel... (strange).

And yes its obvious Shaw wants to get into cellular. Most likely Rogers..

But with a contract with Bell there is always the chance Bell might buy-out MTS or SaskTel... now wait! Bell has no service in the Prairies (MB and SK) I think they may have service in Van. and Cal/Edm.

I bet it will be a big deal with Rogers on the rights to the western provinces coverage... that means I could turn into a Shaw Wireless client...

Shaw as a Rogers MVNO would be SO F'N PRO!!
I would go out and buy a SHAW sim card just to cellebrate.

I highly doubt Ted Rogers would want other companies piggy backing off his towers...rogers has the title of the only gsm provider in canada(excluding fido which is owned by rogers) so I don't see it happening personally.

Hmm, List of other Networks who Piggy Back off of Roger's Towers:
Sears Connect (Reseller)
Former Simpro (Went Bankrupt, Rogers took over existing accounts)
Talaphone Mobility (Reseller)
Cityfone (Reseller)
7-11 SpeakOut (Reseller)
Fido Solutions (Owned by Rogers now)
The Former ZeroGravity (Reseller)
Sprint Canada Wireless (Owned by Rogers now)
Videotron (Reseller)
Primus (Reseller)
Shaw (COMING SOON)

Looks like Rogers DOES like to allow others to piggyback off their network!!!
I STAND CORRECTED

drewber23 2006-11-11 09:41 PM

Yea I was kinda referring to a telcom provider like Bell, Telus and Rogers...Telus leaches off of Bell but is a major competitor for us...I just I was trying to say if shaw goes mobile on rogers towers it will be the same as those other companies u mentioned..a lack of phones, lack of price plans and not competition for us. :p

classicsat 2006-11-12 01:39 PM

About half of them use the Microcell/Fido network, I believe.
At least Citifone and its resellers (which was on the Microcell network before Rogers bought it), Simpro, and the 7-11 service, but I think can extend to the Rogers network.
