Viewing habits of the general audience differ from us PVR-owning, "tech savvy!" posters here on the boards. We watch what we want, when we want. But most viewers still follow the grand, 50-year-old tradition of watching live and being influenced by promos of what's up next. Thus, lead-ins are important. Egad, I bet these viewers even watch commercials - possibly with the sound on!

Can you imagine a prime time actor bitching that his show was move by 30 minutes?
Yes. A bad time slot has killed many a show.

We're talking about different things here. If a show is struggling then moving it against stiff competition will even further hurt the ratings.

Moving Leno results in better ratings for the news which leads to a good lead-in for Leno which leads to a good lead in for O'brain.

The competition is basically the same with stronger lead-ins. I can't see the ratings going down only up.

If somebody told me that Letterman was moving to 12:05 AM I wouldn't suddenly stop watching. I would just adjust my PVR timers.

NBC should see this as an opportunity in disguise, and put both Conan and Leno in a reality-TV based show like Last Comic Standing, then let the viewers decide which one 'wins'.

CrazyInSane 2010-01-13 12:09 PM

The thing is, Jay Leno did horrible in the ratings too back in 1992 when he took over for Carson... it took him maybe a year and a half to start beating Letterman, which he did all the way through to 2009 (which again begs the question, why is NBC so effing stupid that they replaced him with Conan in the first place?).

So my point is they should have gave Conan more than just a few months to get better ratings. And like Conan said in his statement, Leno was getting a hell of a lot better primetime lead-in shows than Conan is (Leno had big dramas/local news, Conan has the crappy Leno Show and local news).

I think Conan's point is the REmoving Leno from primetime and leaving him in the traditional Tonight Show time slot will improve his (Conan's) ratings immediately.

"What are the viewing habits of people who need a "lead in" to watch local news? If I want to watch local news (and that's big IF) I know exactly when they start and on what channel(s). Are millions of people turning TV first time in their lives every day to say "oh, look ... news ... let's stick with this channel and watch them"? "

My thoughts, exactly! Every night, at 11 pm, I turn to Global BC and then at 11:30 pm I switch to CTV Vancouver to get their take on Local News. I can't see why you would need a "strong lead in" to watch your favourite local News channel.
BTW Apparently, Jimmy Kimmel "mocked Jay Leno" by wearing a gray wig and fake chin last night on his show and when I click on the video of this (You tube and many others) I get:"This video contains content from Jimmy Kimmel Live, who has decided to block it in your country." Does anybody have a link to the clip in question? Thanks

I'm betting that Jay will do the last honorable thing left which would be to resign completely from NBC. Then NBC would have to sweet talk Conan PDQ or else they'd be out two which would be completely hilarious!! That would mean "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Falon"? Maybe Jimmy Kimmel? Or maybe even David Letterman.

I've got a pair of tickets to be in the audience for what may be Conan's last week. If it is, that should make the taping pretty interesting. But I've got the feeling Jay will stand down and NBC with patch things up with Conan.

Back in 2004 Conan's contract was up and he was thinking of going to another network. NBC in their infinite wisdom decided to offer him the Tonight Show in 2009 to keep him on board. At the same time, I believe Leno signed a contract to do the tonight show only until 2009. NBC didn't think that Leno would still be doing so well in the ratings when the transfer occurred, or that he still wanted to work, so as to not lose Leno they decided to offer him the 10PM spot.

Leno's "crappy" show actually gets the same ratings as he did with the Tonight Show, but you need better ratings in prime time than you do at 11:35PM to be successful. I think that the lead-in show for the local news is more important for ratings than a lead-in show for a late-night talk show. Everyone likes someone different so they will make the effort to change channels to a host they like the best. Or they will check the guide to see who is on each show each night and make up their mind which one to watch that way.

I know a lot of people who don't like Conan have switched over to Letterman--and it shows in the ratings. That doesn't mean that Conan is bad, they just don't like his style of humour.

Leno is like McDonalds. Pretty much the same, bland menu day in, day out.

Conan is that crazy uncle who likes to play with explosives! :p

Coco is loco

Conan is unwatchable. He's juvenile but thinks he's witty. At the same time, he's one arrogant, sob. He can't accept anyone getting the last laugh even an invited legitimate comic. He has to continually one-up any guest with his childish antics to get the zombie audience to laugh.

Leno may not be enough "off the wall" to please the below 49 crowd but he respects his guests and has always been a gentleman. many of his regular segments are hilarious - Jaywalking, Battle of All Stars, headlines etc.
Better guests too. Who wants to be shadowed by Conan the Barbie Player ?

The error was NBC's for ever trying to keep Conan happy 5 years ago. They should have let him walk then and saved everyone this debacle.

Conan does not have the class to be hosting this show.

By the way, fallon is no better. what a waste of two hours.

Get rid of both. Put Leno back with the 2nd hour to someone really funny - maybe Chelsea Handler or Russell Brand or even Jimmy Kimmel ...there are many others

rileyparrish 2010-01-13 09:30 PM

First off, I have to say I am with Conan all the way, whatever he decides to do. That said, right now the NBC Schedule is like this:

8-10pm: Primetime Block, 10-11pm: Jay Leno Show, 11-1134pm: Local News, 1134pm-1237am: Tonight Show w/Conan, 1237-136am: Late Night w/Jimmy Fallon, 136am: Last Call w/Carson Daly.

So NBC wants to cut out the Jay Leno show between 10-11pm which would allot them another hour for primetime dramas which would apparently keep more viewers sticking around for the local news, right? Then they want to give Leno an abbreviated version of the old show from 11:34pm-12:05am which would make the Tonight Show start 30mins later than usual?

The only argument Conan has is that he doesn't want the show to start later because it's always been aired at the same time for the last few decades, correct? That and Jay will be stealing some thunder because he has the better timeslot and a lot of people go to bed around that time so the Late Night timeblock is make-or-break.

So if Conan DOES move to FOX, they will likely put him on at 10:35(after local news) because FOX only has a 2-hour primetime block and requires its affiliates to show news at 10pm instead of 11pm. This would give him an hour advantage over all the other talk shows and FOX's ratings could only go up because they have nothing but re-runs or infomercials filling time after the news.

When did Conan ever disrespect his guests?

Your first paragraph makes me wonder whether you've even watched Conan. If you have, clearly the humour is being lost on you, and you should stick to watching Leno.

jumpy27 2010-01-13 09:53 PM

I like Leno for his Headlines, Jaywalking and animal segments. He doesn't do very good interviews because he stays to the script too much and doesn't really listen to what the person is saying sometimes.

I like Conan for his "Year 3000" and Celebrity poll segments. He is a better interviewer than Leno.

Jimmy Fallon is the worst interviewer of the current late night TV hosts.

I like Letterman for his interviewing skills. He is the best interviewer of them all. IMHO.

cooper83 2010-01-13 11:36 PM

jumpy27, I would agree with those comments.

Fallon has the best skits & games (7th Floor West is pure gold). If you're a fan of SNL during Fallon's stint, you're probably a fan of his show.

All 4 have excellent musical acts.
