Angelfish I often find the location closest to me (Dufferin/Wilson) is OFTEN out of stock on just about anything.

Factory Direct service dept.

I have used the service dept in the Burlington store and have had great (not just good) service and friendly interface each and every time. At least 3 repairs on two different computers. Also had a larger harddrive installed in this current desktop and all data from old unit transferred successfully to my liking. Replaced harddrive under warranty on my wife's 4 month old HP computer with no hassles. Some floor personnel very knowledgible while others on a steep learning curve. sailmaker

keep away from the FactoryDirect

bought two computers, one laptop one desktop. The windows system for the desktop did not work and the DVD containing Windows 7 could not be used either. They asked me to mail it back after I contacted them. But the shipping fee (I have to pay myself) is more than $50 which is even more than the price I have the system reinstalled....

The laptop was unreasonably old that even the screen display was blurry. I was told that was the cleanrence item after I contact them, but I could not find anywhere mentioning it in their product description. Further their price was not as much cheaper.

JamesK Even the fully functional stuff may not be a good deal as it's close to regular retail price. Know your prices before buying there.

EmmEff Definitely... they do sell a lot of what they call "class C" merchandise, which is basically the bottom of the barrel (ie. LCD displays with dead pixels, hard drives that have many bad sectors, physical defects, etc).

I used to deal with one of FD's main suppliers of refurb/used/clearance merchandise and got to know what FD was being supplied with pretty well.

JamesK Also, you have to be very careful about what you buy. While there can be good deals, there are also a lot of not so good.

EmmEff You cannot blame FD for the failure of the products they sell- they don't make them nor remanufacture them. You can blame them for poor customer service. Any retail operation that doesn't stand behind their product or trust their customers is one to avoid. Their return policy is poor. Their overall customer service is poor.

Not a quality company

Although I have never personally bought any item from Factory Direct, my business partner seems frequent them more than I like.

He has bought bluetooth headsets, MP3 players, and computers among other things from them. All have failed after a few months of usage. I especially hate it when he bought an used desktop for the office. It came with on the OS license on the case but I had to reinstall the OS from scratch. This is not the problem, but it does take time to get it up and running with all the proper updates and patches. For the price there are lots of other computer refurb retailers that have better deals and less hassle.

The truth is no retailer or service provider is perfect and occasionally even the best companies can disappoint. Our experience is that good companies have problems but they typically make every reasonable effort to resolve problems.

If you had a problem and are posting a negative review, then please note what efforts you made to resolve the problem and the feedback you received. If you think the efforts to resolve the problem were NOT reasonable then please explain why. Saying you phoned up and talked to some idiot, suggests the problem may lie with the consumer and NOT the company!

No posting URLS or Directs to Competitors will be deleted
