multitasker Thanks for your replies. I was wondering if they were just cheap or what. Because I used to work at the TVA newsroom a few years ago (2002) and they had started editing and broadcasting with Avid a few months before (basically digital editing instead of using tapes). Anyho they were saving and broadcasting everything in "draft mode", with lower quality, to save server space.

I was wondering if NBC was doing the same, because their colours really suck.

Jeune Loup In my opinion, the SD feed of NBC is the worst of the us network. But in HD, it's quite good. The Olympics, the Today Show, NBC nightly news, Jay Leno all look great in HD.

The Sd picture of cbc and radio-canada is very good in SD and even better in HD. It always blows me away to see that most shows on RC and CBC are in HD. I guess when the taxpayers are paying, there is no limits.

On the big US networks, a lot of the big shows are not in HD, which is weird.

The SD picture of HGTV and Food also look great, in SD.

EnderWiggin I have been noticing the same thing, my GF watched the Martha Stewart show the other day and I was amazed that the show was so poor looking and out of focus, even one the HD channel as well. I can agree that part of the problem might be beyond Videotron's control but I still wonder if they might be compressing the SD channels to make room for the HD channels. But there are a few SD channels (e.g., Space) that look surprisingly good...

jvincent Depending on how Videotron gets the feed from Burlington (antenna, fiber, direct wireless, etc) it's possible that the source is poorly encoded or that they are receiving it correctly and messing it up when they re-encode it for digital cable.

Either way, in general SD channels are all over the map quality wise so you might just be out of luck.

Bad colours on US channels?

Hello everyone,

Not sure where to post this so I'll just have a go right here.

Is there a significant quality difference (imagewise) between US channels and say, CBC? I'm watching the Games (digital cable, Videotron, not HD) and I must say that the colours on NBC are godawful... I'm not a technician so I can't describe it properly but it's just bland. CBC, in comparison, seems much sharper and colourful.

So who's fault is that? My TV? Videotron? Or does NBC in Burlington just have outdated retransmission equipment (spent all their money on their "supperdoppler" thingy?)

I hope this hasn't been discussed before... I made a few feeble attempts at checking for previous posts on the topic to no avail...
