The system update should not be disabled. I agree that it should be "beter" than it is, i.e. simply update when the unit is off anyway.
Just create timers for the shows you want to record either auto-tune to use your HTPC or direct to PVR.

Wow... digging up bones here with this "old" thread.
Has anyone seen this problem get resolved yet? I tried this past weekend to use my HTPC to start recording shows again, simply because I want to be able to watch my recorded shows upstairs in the master bedroom on our laptop.
I read the posts above, and "I Want My HDTV" says to disable the nightly updates and do it manually every couple of days. I looked for this, and there's no option.
Here's what I tried this past weekend:
1) disabled STANDBY timeout... no luck
2) changed the update time to something during the day (10am) to see if it would recognize that live TV was being watched and that the system was NOT idle for more than a few minutes. I changed the channel, BTW, just before the update time, and guess what? Receiver powered itself off.
SO - no luck here with getting any of this shut off... has anyone developed or gotten a solution to this? I have moved this one back to the bedroom (single tuner mode now...) and am using my 6141 instead for the HTPC. It does NOT shut off... two days straight!

Previous Post Idiot Mistake Sorry
Apologies for posting the previous item marked E661. I obviously am in the wrong forum. I think what happened is that I did a search about my issue for my PVR 5900 and E661 software and found this thread and just clicked to post without realizing I was in the 9242 forum and not the 5900 forum.
Again, I apologize. I certainly never intended to double post or to bore you guys with my problem on my digital PVR.

E661 Watching Program While EPG Downloading
Given the odd things that happen with E661, I want to ask if any of you have had any odd things happen if you are actually watching a program at the time the EPG is downloading.
After reading the prior posts and searching for an answer, I have verified that my PVR is set to disable the standby mode.
I often want to watch recorded programs at the time the EPG downloads (yes I am a night
guy) but have been afraid to do so since E661 arrived.
I'd appreciate any insights and/or suggestions you all may have.

|I_Want_My_HDTV||Nightly reboots are E*'s solution to poor quality software. Disabling them will make the receiver unstable over time. The 9200 was the same way after it's introduction. If you disable the nightly restart, do it manually every few days (by holding down the power button.) Standby can also cause issues. Some PVRs are unstable if standby is enabled. It's not a stretch to imagine that some may become unstable if it is disabled (maybe due to lack of nightly reboots.)|

My 9242 does the same thing, and I came up with the same solution as you.
However recently I would come home after work and find it had also gone into standby mode.
Now, just to verify that you and I are having the same problem, you did go into the menu <menu-8-9> and disable it, right?

|ben_95sl1||Well, the autotune at the same time seems to not actually work....the update time seems to vary more than i expected, i think it took like 30min for it to reboot...so I set the update time to 6am, and the autotune to 6:59am, as there is usually nothing ever recorded in that period. Has worked for a few days now.|

Hi Robert these codes are in the Universal Remote Control (MX-980,MX-900,Mx-850,etc) IR database. I used the Dish 942 codes and the discrete on and off worked for the 9242

I agree updates are useful, but they should give you the option to disable. People with Slingboxes would run into the same issue as I am having.
If it can't handle recording 24 hrs of the day, or setting an autotune to the same time as update I will find that very amusing.
