QuantumFluxx This is indeed good news. I hope that it holds true for the 360's dashboard update this december as well. I watch the odd tv show that isn't running in canada, or, isn't running in canada yet. Waiting for shows like Eureka and Stargate which come here after a season is done or midway through is just pointless.

I also watch a lot of japanese animation and that stuff is all in divx/h264. It'd be so nice to see h264 playback possible in some way. I currently can't even do that with transcoding properly.

If you look at the products on the shelf at BB, FS, or Costco you'll find many DivX capable machines. The ones that don't are old models.

Yup. It is. I think you are missing the point. This system (like 360) are consoles but have also been marketed as Media centers with either built in next gen format players or available add-ons. If you can find me another product in that category that competes/exceeds these units, I'll be interested in seeing it. Meanwhile, I (as well as others) enjoy the prospect of continuing to utilize the media center aspects and potentially soon adding the capability to stream DiVX content to it.

Most (if not all) consumer DVD players that I have seen don't stream them. So it's a matter of exceeding those not catching up.

Eluder Agreed... it'd be nice to retire my LG upscaling divx/DVD player if the PS3 or 360 will play divx.

dunlop For the record anyone can play DIVX with a 360 or PS3 using a transcoding software (I use TVersity). Having the system support it is better however as when you transcode the file you will lose the ability to FF/REW and you need a decent PC.

For the 360, I convert any DIVX to MP4 using Videora and then stream.

What type of content are people watching via the DIVX format?
Torrented tv shows and movies.

timmy1 I download the odd TV show that I missed, but it's mostly movies that are out of print/unavailable in North America.

calvin940 I watch TV shows in DiVX. My BEV PVR simply cannot hold all the content I want to record and I don't have time to watch the shows I want quick enough to prevent erasure of the shows (or PVR fill-up).

Tezster Does anyone know for certain if the announced PS3 DivX support will include playback of videos encoded up to 1080p resolution (and do so via HDMI)? I've often heard that the potential for using divx to view pirated content would make the availability of an HD-capable stand-alone DivX player unlikely.

Eluder That's awesome, hopefully the rumour of the 360 getting DivX in the next update is true as well... this might mean I'll be dumping my LG DivX/DVD player...

calvin940 I saw this too. I am soo psyched for this. Cannot wait to get rid of the transcoding. yay!

DivX support coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 support in the works

Quote:
DivX has announced that the Sony PlayStation 3 will soon support the DivX video codec. We suspected as much when the PS3 2.0 firmware was released, as it includes the ability to detect both DivX and Xvid files. According to the DivX team, full support will arrive with a future software update. DivX CEO Kevin Hell said in a statement, "We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3. Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."
