enoga LOL. I sold my 60GB on ebay and rushed out to buy the 40GB for this exact reason. Finally proper airflow and a lot less noise. Granted the 40GB has less components to cool but compared with my 60GB it's a lot cooler. DID I MENTION QUIET!

To answer your question, yes, mine behaves the same way. When standing vertical the top is cool to the touch and it almost seems like it sucks air but the back exhausts hot air. Fan only occasionally goes into second gear. I think that as long as you feel hot air moving in the back then the fan is running and blowing air one direction only, which seems a lot more logical then my 60GB that was exhausting hot air top and back. Did I mention that I had 3 replacements sent by Sony before I gave up?

skyfire2261 The 40gig PS3 probubly won't run as hot as say the 80 or 60gig iterations of the PS3 mainly due to the fact the EE was taken out so the unit runs a little cooler over all thus the fans don't come on as quickly.

You still have fans though at both the back and side I would imagine, just it only comes on when the unit needs to be cooled so play for a few hours and it will come on.

I have a 60gig and the fans come on within a half hour of playing usually and I play for loooong periods and my PS3 stays very cool.

Sorry to hear about your 80gig, very rare that happens with PS3's.

40gb PS3: Less Heat Than 80GB model?

so i originally purchased an 80gb ps3 which was a dud, nothing but issues and i simply wasnt willing to ship off my ps3 and wait for a refurb unit after i just dropped 600$ on it.

i took it back and bought a 40gb ps3, works fantastic no issues whatsoever.

my question is, for those WITH a 40gb ps3. when you put your hand on the side of the unit where that massive oval shaped vents are, do you feel any heat comming out of the system, or even the hint of a fan blowing out? my 80gb was very hot and i could feel air moving out and on the back.

so i am wondering if the fan stopped working or maybe there i no fan at all, at the rear of the system i definatly feel heat moving out.

i am just a little paranoid about this as my first ps3 had some heat issues and i dont want this one to turn out the same way.
