I read it and loved it. They added alot of extra sub-plots that the book didn't have.
I found the general plot to be the mostly the same until about half way through.
The book has a different ending.

|PFD||I got the original book for Christmas and just finished reading it. anyone read it? it's good, but quite different from the show. [Deb never dates the Ice Cream truck killer, as one example.] One of the few instances where the dramatization is actually better than the book.|

|ht_addict||I started watching this show a couple off episodes in, so after the season finally I went back and watched the couple I missed. My wife watched them with me, kept telling me how creepy this show was but I guess it hooked her. Thanks to TMN OnDemand she got too see the whole season in one weekend. Now we both can't wait for season 2.|

First post here.. re. Dexter.
Loved every single minute of every single show. This was the one thing I would look forward to every tuesday evening when I got home. Rogers would update their listings and the next episode of Dexter would be in the "New this week" section.
So, thinking ahead seeing that nobody here hinted at it:
* The cops found out what the ITK's real identity was, i.e his real name. How long could it be before somebody puts 2 and 2 together and makes the connection to Dexter. Somebody like Doakes for instance, or even Deb. That could make for some interesting plots in season 2 don't ya think?!
Can't wait to find out.
P.S - Hello all!

I actually think it made perfect sense for Dexter to make Rudy's death look like a suicide for two reasons:
1) Closure for Debra. If he killed Rudy and "disposed" of him, Debra would never know he was dead and she'd always be afraid he'd come back for her. Now she knows she's safe.
2) By making it look like a suicide, it actually reduces the chance of the cops digging deeper into things and figuring out the connection between Rudy and Dexter. The cops already know Rudy was the Ice Truck Killer, and now that they know he's dead it's pretty much case closed. They really have no reason to dig into it further. However, if Rudy disappeared then they'd still be actively investigating him and his past much, much longer because they'd still be looking for him.
And as for the cops looking over the crime scene and possibly noticing it may not have been a suicide, keep in mind that their number one crime scene expert is Dexter himself, so obviously he'll dismiss any "insconsistencies" and say it definitely looks like it was a suicide.
Anyway, I agree that Dexter was a great series overall and look forward to season 2!

You know, it occurs to me that I'm now engaging in a dispassionate analysis of what happens when you cut someone's throat and then hang them upsidedown to bleed out. This show has corrupted me.

I'm surprised Dexter hasn't disposed of Rudy's body. Dexter (and us) would have known he's not coming back, but everyone else couldn't really be looking for his killer if he went missing. They would have assumed he ran away.
Instead, they chose to make every character, trained police officers and forensic specialists look at the crime scene and drink the "suicide theory" Kool-Aid rather blindly.
Otherwise, a FANTASTIC show. Can't wait for next season.

As above, if it isn't suicide, then they're looking for another killer. hmmm... who could it be, wonders Doakes? Who had motive?
I may be wrong, having only watched it once, but wasn't Rudy saran-wrapped when he was killed? That would lead to an absence of blood on his shirt, and on his shirtsleeve from the cut. The blood pattern from the level table and initial cut would be fairly evident -- you'd be able to follow the drip/spatter pattern to the inverted drainage position. Also, a cut deep enough to cause fatal bleeding is going to need to hit a major vein or artery. That creates a bit of spurting, at least at first. A forensic analyst would be looking at where that blood landed. Is it where it's supposed to be? Is there a spatter-shadow that would indicate someone else was there?
Of course, this is all premised on the cops being interested in anything other than a tidy package.
Never mind, this is nitpicking a terrific show.

|faston||The idea is that the police are lead to believe it was suicide. What Matteo is saying is that these small points would give away the fact that it wasn't suicide. ie, that he wasn't already inverted when the cut happened.|

Matteo, I'm not sure I follow your points...

Dearly Damaged Debra is going to piece it together, I bet. Maybe she already knows, or has always known who Dex is. Also, I see hints that the GF might be willing to be, or become, oblivious or complicit.
I wonder why Dexter wasn't at Rudy's death crime-scene. There were two issues I saw there which would drive a forensics team nuts, assuming they cared enough to look for it: First, the blood drops from the level table followed by the transition to the inverted "drainage". Second, Rudy's body was clothed and there wouldn't be any spatter on the clothes.
There are an awful lot of people who are in a position to link Dexter and Rudy together now. Files lady; Det. Batista, Debra, Doakes, Paul...
He can't kill all of them, can he? Would Dexter's code (Harry's code) permit Dexter to kill to prevent his own capture or unmasking?
