Bear in mind that these are theoretical patterns based on arbitrary radials that only take onto account terrain close to the transmitter. Longley-Rice recption predictions are available for WCAX from rabbitears, info here. The WPTZ-DT temporary L-R patterns have not yet been computed at rabbitears.info, but you can try checking them out here. |

Yep! The temporarily antenna was installed over the weekend and broadcasting has resumed as of Sunday (December 1st). Both WCAX 3.1 and NBC 5.1, along with their sub-channels, are all back on the air! Note though it's only a temporary solution, so expect a weaker power level and signal strength. Although I'm getting both channels reliably tonight, CBS is down to ~81% and NBC down to ~59%. Normally I get both channels around 100% in my area of Montreal. |

Just a heads up, CBS (WCAX-3, VT) and NBC (WPTZ-5, NY) BOTH ceased broadcasting as of Tuesday, November 19th, due to a fire that damaged/destroyed their antennas on Mt. Mansfield. It's been over a week now of dead air. Affected channels, currently offline are: 3.1 - CBS 3.2 - Movies! 3.3 - Ion Television 3.4 - Start TV 5.1 - NBC 5.2 - The CW 5.3 - MeTV A permanent repair (or replacement if necessary) is likely several months away, however they are working daily to construct a temporary antenna on WFFF's tower. Weather conditions are slowing down and delaying the work, but hopefully it should be operational in the coming days. |

Looks like Gray is buying Cross Hills' other station in Claremont, NH, as well. https://www.wcax.com/content/news/WC...564175311.html https://www.rbr.com/cross-hill-gray-wyci/ https://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/...ac/4107469002/ https://www.rbr.com/ycn-gray-nh/ Combined coverage of WCAX and its Rutland translator, along with WYCI and WYCU together on one rabbitears.info map . Don't know what happens to WYCX channel 2, which according to Wikipedia, is the parent station of WYCU Charlestown/Claremont. |

This proposed acquisition of WYCI by WCAX is great news. One easy way to quickly increase WYCI coverage would be to add it as a subchannel of WCAX. This would give them time to install a new transmitter on channel 34 as a DTS operation. Ideally, this new transmitter would be located on Mt. Mansfield so that it can provide the same coverage as the other stations in the market. Also, people would not need to upgrade their antenna system to receive this new station. tvlurker, thanks for sharing! |

WYCI sale pending to WCAX Cross Hill Communications, owners of WYCI Saranac Lake has applied to the FCC to sell the station to Gray Television, owners of WCAX-DT Burlington. Details at https://licensing.fcc.gov/cdbs/CDBS_...um=1&exhcnum=1 Some excerpts: Quote:
Gray has the resources, desire, and track record to upgrade WYCI(DT) so its signal
reaches significantly more viewers in the market. In fact, as its very first step when conducting its diligence on WYCI(DT) and before even negotiating with Cross Hill to acquire the station, Gray asked its consulting engineer to draw up scenarios for upgrading the station. Since then, Gray has identified two potential sites from which it can install a DTS for WYCI(DT) to ensure that the station finally has broadcast facilities comparable to the other full-power commercial television stations in the DMA. After closing, Gray will promptly take action to file for and implement a DTS or similar upgrade to bring WYCI(DT)’s signal to the rest of the DMA. Quote:
Under Gray’s control, the station will continue to air the MyNetwork programming, but
WYCI(DT) will also provide local news and breaking emergency weather information for the first time in the station’s history. Gray’s management currently plans to add two hours of highquality, local news each weekday morning by extending WCAX-TV’s leading local news brand to WYCI(DT). If this proves successful, Gray will consider adding news in other time periods as well. In addition, Gray’s local news team will have the ability to air cut-ins on WYCI(DT) with coverage of local breaking news or severe weather affecting the market. Because the market is comprised of areas in northern and central Vermont and the northeastern most portion of New York, the ability to cover severe weather is critical in the market, especially during the prolonged winter. These programming improvements “are exactly the type of tangible public interest benefits that the Commission seeks to obtain with its ownership rules.” |

rwarren | A fellow Rosemounter! My antenna is outdoors, on the roof. I fear I may need a(nother) visit from the antenna guy for an adjustment. $$ |

Rwarren, If your antenna is in a basement as your signature seems to indicate, do not expect miracles. You may need a better antenna and you certainly need height ! Btw, WPTZ may be licensed to Plattsburgh but its transmitter is located on mount Mansfield like the others (and WNNE is actually a sub-channel of WPTZ). Yagi |

I haven't been able to watch WCAX or any of the substations for 2 weeks. I use a Bunny. From my p.o.v. they shut off the signal before the weekend before the switchover. I've rescanned at least 6x since the 24th, plus several times before, at all hours of the day and night and all weather, but only had service for a couple of hours at best. I know I lose all the American channels (CBS x4, PBS Vermont x4) and City during bad weather, but this is ridiculous. The time when I had service was when I manually added 20. it didn't last, it was choppy the way 47 (multicultural station) is, and dropped out as soon as the signal weakened. My antenna guy was baffled (before the switchover) and blamed it on a bad tuner in the TV. After my complaint on FB, I was directed to a telephone number in Vermont. I have left a message and I await reply (hopefully on their tab). Interestingly I have had some reception on 5.1, 5.3, and 31, all from Plattsburgh. Bright and clear this morning! Normally I only get a brief peek at those channels when half of my choices are off the air. |

WCAX and its sub-channels appeared on channels 20.1 through 20.4! I had to manually disable/remove the old channel positions in my tuner (that's looking for WCAX on physical channel 22, and no longer getting a signal), and then do another re-scan. Fixed it! The virtual channel mapping is back to 3.1 through 3.4, where it should be. No luck with my Apex digital to analog tuner box connected to my old CRT TV though. It has the channels mapped to 20.1 to 20.4 at the moment. It's likely it may need a full rescan to resolve this. Also glad to report WCAX is coming in at the same 100% signal strength I had before the move. Much stronger than many of the local Montreal channels ironically. |
