Yes, it absolutely would. Between the locals, specialties, ethnic and PPV channels, you're probably at around 300 some odd channels. That is a lot of bandwidth free'd up. Yes, some of that will be replaced with HD equivalents but for all the SD channels that remain, you could probably fit them on 2 transponders using MPEG-4 compression and 8PSK Turbo modulation. Plus there is still a bunch of transponders on Nimiq 4 that could fit another HD channel or two. If you look at the traffic plan on Nimiq 4, 31 of the 32 transponders is used for SD channels. If you drop all the channels that are already in HD, convert the remaining to MPEG-4 HD or SD, you'd have at least 10x transponders remaining. As an example Shaw Direct is using 4 on F1, 22 on F2 and 16 on G1 for a total of 42 transponders. Bell is using 64 in their current configuration. Even with all the ethnic and small community channels that Shaw doesn't carry, most of those would be MPEG-4 SD and would fit on one transponder.
I don't know what's going on with the Satellite division these days. It's been years since they released a new receiver. They may be holding off on the MPEG-2 decommission because they don't have enough stock to replace all the MPEG-2 hardware that's out there. My guess is whatever receivers they are using today are not being manufactured anymore.

|MCIBUS||If they would get rid of a lot of their PPV channels t it might?|

|reidw||@bigoranget : One HD channel takes up the bandwidth of six SD channels. Would dropping the SD channels really free up that much room?|

The older HD receivers have been retired. I'm pretty sure all MPEG-4 capable receivers can tune past 999.
Migrating to an all MPEG-4 line-up not only benefits customers with more HD choice but it will also save on uplink costs. I'm fairly sure they could power down as many 10 transponders between the two satellites.

|reidw||@MCIBUS : The official channel range for HD on Bell sat. is 1000 and up. However Bell also assigned the 800 range for HD because some of the older HD receivers only went to 999. I suspect that there are very few of those older receivers still in use but Bell I guess doesn't want to lose any customers who might have the older units. There's no use of extra bandwidth by the way even though the channel appears in two places so it really doesn't matter. Even if Bell dropped the duplicates they'd still not have any extra bandwidth for more real HD channels nor could their current equipment ever have the capability of offering 4K. Basically Bell Sat. is looking at a bleak future in the long run.|

If I'm not mistaken I do believe the HD on Bll sat are in the 1000 range.
Regarding the 800' I seem to recall there was an issue with some receivers regarding the 800's years bac=k whether the fixeds this issue I'm noyt sure. Someone on this forum mentioned years ago. Where that post is I don't know.

TWN HD & MeteoMedia HD I'm assuming there national feed and not local feed?
With Bell Fibe(at least in Ottawa) the SD version is local while the HD version is the national feed?

I've got the movie pkg (Western Canada).
Recently when they had a free preview for the movie pkg, the Eastern CR1 feed was available. Now it's gone.
Anyone in the West still have that Eastern feed? What reason could they possibly have to not make both feeds available?
