Is there such a thing as a solid state hard drive that could be used and powered by the 830 USB? What is the available power from the USB specification? What's the probability to locate a USB2 mechanical HD using the USB2 power that would work as an external drive to the 830? I use a WD Elements 1 TB mechanical hard drive that works with USB2 or USB3 for backup for my PC. |

ExDilbert | An external 3.5” mechanical hard drive would definitely need a separate power source. An external 2.5" USB 2.0 drive usually needs an external power source though I've seen them work without one. The power available on the USB port is one deciding factor. Some devices provide more USB power than others and some drives and cases require more power than others. A USB Y cable to draw extra power from a second USB port can help. The 830 would need two USB ports for that though. |

USB 2.0 would be more than adequate for HD. I don’t think any of Shaw Direct’s HD feeds are higher than 10 Mbps (and the MPEG 4 feeds would be even lower than that). USB 2.0 can handle that easily. The power requirements of an external drive are more dependent on the drive than anything else. A USB flash drive uses very little power, but an external 3.5” mechanical hard drive would likely need a separate power source. |

USB3 830 pvr It is my understanding that the 830PVR has a USB2.0 connection that may be used with an external drive. Is it possible for Shaw Direct to upgrade to USB3.0 via a software update? It seems strange that ARRIS would use an outdated USB specification for the 830. Is the USB 2 specification adequate for HD and power requirements of an external USB powered drive? |
