ronsnbrd I'd like to thank k80 for providing great information and listening to our suggestions. As a user of both a 630 and 830, I have several:
1. I would like to see some kind of a notice pop up when I create more than 2 timers in a time slot causing a conflict. The lack of this was one of the unforeseen changes that I encountered when switching from Bell. I missed several recordings before I realized what was happening and even then sometimes forgot to check Upcoming Recordings after creating a new timer, or when checking there didn't realize that the default "hide conflicts" was in effect (why is that the default? That is what I go there to see.)

2. As mentioned in this thread and I have complained both verbally and in writing to Shaw D, the fast forward function on the 830 is clunky and primitive, being very jerky because it does not show enough frames/second, particularly in the slowest FF. Also, while the first level of FF is too slow to be of much use, the second level is too fast to allow one to react in time to go to normal speed. I usually need to skip back once or twice to get where I want to be. This function definitely needs some improvement! (IMO) I would like to see the first level to be about 4 - 5 times the speed and the second level to be around 15 times normal speed. Instead it jumps from 2 times to about 30 times. The third level I never use as it is way too fast to even see where the playback is and it is much simpler to use the X minutes skip forward, which by the way, is a great feature in the Shaw D receivers. The first level of FF is much better on the 630 both in speed and smoothness, although again, the second level is too fast.

3. It is great to have the option of a full screen guide. I would like to have the option of doing away with the small screen in the upper right corner and the sound in other screens, particularly the PVR screen. It is most annoying to have a playback stop and suddenly see and/or hear the winner or a late score of a sporting event that I am recording for later enjoyment.

4. I would like to be able to edit the title of a recording. I would use this when I have made a manual recording that I am not going to watch right away so when I see it in the PVR list, I know what it is. I would also use it to add something to multiple recordings of the same program that have just a generic description for all episodes so that I can distinguish them. This one is just on a wish list although I did have it with Bell.

I would just like to add that overall I am very happy with both the 830 and the way the 630 is now operating with the improvements that have been made since its introduction (Thank you Shaw D). I particularly like the ability to change the skip time and the X minutes skipping which I did not have with Bell. The one button 15 minute skip is useful too.

k801809 The HDDSR 800 has a much faster processor, the ability to connect to WiFi and will continue to receive feature enhancements (6XX is no longer on the development train for anything but major defect fixes).

The HDPVR 830 has the ability to schedule recordings for as far as your Guide is loaded, generally 14 days in the future.

830 How far ahead can recordings be scheduled?

How far ahead can recordings be scheduled on an 830 pvr?

600 no longer gets updates

The 800 may have a more speedy processor. The 6xx series of receivers will no longer receive firmware updates.
See the post by a Shaw Direct employee at the link shown below.

I have a 600 and have no plans to change.

ExDilbert The differences are listed elsewhere in another thread, probably the DSR800 discussion thread. (Tried searching but the results were useless.) They are mainly cosmetic with slightly better hardware. The difference in picture quality will be minimal. If a 4K box ever becomes available, that would make a difference with 4K programming.

max527 Can anyone tell me the differences between DSR600 and DSR800? I mainly watch sports. Is it worth upgrading? Thanks

RuralRouter There was some good discussion on that forum about whether of not an HD of more than 1 TB worked.

When I bought the 1 TB hard drive, the link showed a 1 TB model. I see that the link is no longer valid.
I liked that the e-SATA cable was included at no extra charge in the box.

I looked up my drive on Amazon and saw this:

JasperJoe That link takes us to a 2TB drive. Is that supported?

630 Quirk or External HD

Starchoice, not exactly what you have experienced. This may be my 630 or the external hard drive I installed back in April. I just love the new HD, but I twice now I experienced a quirk. The playback of a recording results in a blank screen and no audio. I exit the recording and start over; all is fine then.

It has only happened a couple of times with no real loss so the huge benefit of the external HD offsets any very occasional and recoverable quirk.

I am grateful to ipabrewer for posting this recommendation:

ExDilbert Shaw may be remapping channels to different transponders. The change should be detected automatically by the receiver but sometimes requires a reboot for the new mapping to take effect.

Intermittent signal loss?

Lately we have been experiencing a strange happening. When tuning to channel 231 (ABC Detroit) yesterday, we had no picture or sound. All other Detroit channels were fine.

Looking at the Status screen, the signal level showed -2.3 dB. All other channels showed over 8 dB. We did a soft reboot and the channel came back to life and the dB showed 8.7.

This happened to our 630 and 830 receivers.

Yesterday was ABC Detroit but the other times it would be other US channels. There does not seem to be a particular pattern

Looking for any ideas as to what may be going on here.

ExDilbert PVR disks should be kept under 75% capacity to maintain good performance. (That goes for any device with a hard drive.) Over 90% capacity, performance degrades dramatically and may result in recording or playback issues.

k801809 At this time, no, sorry. There are no planned updates for the 6XX line of receivers. How full is your hard drive? We definitely find the more recordings, the slower the system will get overall. The 8XX line has a much higher processing power.

Are you going to do the same for 630's as I have had issues SKIPping forward when something else is recording?
