Brightonian Wham Rochester installed their new antenna at full height and 30kw power about a month ago.
They had been at a reduced signal since repack.

Zank Frappa @heans , I think something has changed with WHAM Rochester, I've also been getting a strong signal 13-15dB on rf9 the last few nights/mornings but haven't seen it lock with call sign.

@steelzone , thanks, that's what I figured it was, it was a lot like that mystery analog I got last year which turned out to be W29CO Sharon Ohio. You could see a station, but the snow was just too heavy to identify what the image was supposed to be. With W29CO they had a logo in the corner (CTVN) which helped with identification.

steelota @Zank Frappa , CTV Oil Springs still broadcast on RF42. I'm assuming that this is what you caught.

Zank Frappa A bit off topic. I follow the Great Lakes winter ice coverage maps produced by NOAA:

https://www.glerl.noaa.gov/data/ice/#historical

There is, historically, a lot of variability but one thing stands out, at this time this year this is one of the LOWEST levels we've experienced.

One thing that stands out for tropo is the winters that are mild tend to produce very good tropo during the spring/summer and fall, due to all that absorbed heat, of course this is an oversimplification as barometric pressure and a whole host of other issues also come into play but warm bodies of water meeting cooler/dryer air masses tend to produce good results. One need only to look at the propagation in the Middle-East, it's always booming.

Tropospheric Ducting Forecast for VHF & UHF Radio & TV

Here is an article from the National Association of Broadcasters that is well worth the read regarding Mr. Hepburn's tropo maps:

http://www.nab.org/xert/scitech/pdfs/rd082707.pdf

Here is a good article that describes different types of tropo, the why, the when and where:

https://www.tvtechnology.com/opinion...-of-tv-signals

My goal is to eventually hit 300 transmitters, doesn't seem too lofty but given the repack things have gotten a lot more difficult as far as new captures besides stations changing frequencies (which seems like a cheat).

Anyways, enjoy the articles if you are so predisposed.

P.S. Is CKCO still broadcasting on rf42 from Oil Springs, that might have been the analog I got the other morning.

P.P.S. Could you guys (this hobby doesn't seem to attract women, "women nest and men hunt" (Seinfeld : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-d3diodXKPU ) list your transmitter totals in the signature line.

Zank Frappa Picking up some Pittsburgh, Cleveland, all of Erie and a new one, something new on analog rf42, can't see what it is but the tuner locked and there is something there, can see the colours but it's so snowy it's impossible to figure out.

Anyone know what broadcasts on analog 42 from the Cleveland area?

P.S. Also picking up signals on rf9 (I think it's WTOV trying to come in) and something on rf29, don't know what that would be.

8:30am WTOV rf9 Steubenville WV, TVO Paris is blank for me, maybe I'll get lucky and pick up WJET, WYTV is blanking out CITY Woodstock on rf31.

10:15am Cleveland booming, WVIZ on rf34, WOIO/WUAB on rf18, WFMJ rf33, WNEO rf45, WVPX rf22, WBNX f17.

Something from Cleveland way is blanking CHCH on rf15, still blank on rf28 Paris and rf31 Woodstock.

steelota I abandoned any hope after a couple of hours and went to bed. Kept getting those same Indiana stations for about a second or two and nothing else. Today a couple of Cleveland stations, however they are really weak. I seem to be about 100 miles or so from the good stuff. Oh well, better luck next time.

Zank Frappa Weird tropo this am, all stemming from that blob between Columbus and Buckhannon WV. I am getting WWHO Columbus, WTOV Steubenville WV and lots of hits on other rf's (anyone know what's on rf29 in that direction). Anyways, Cleveland stations aren't coming in, they show about 12-14dB but not enough to show picture. Hopefully this improves.

Hope you didn't stay up late in futility Steelzone, this is the kind of tropo I call a "hopper", you get some distant ones but ones that SHOULD come in (like my 24/7 Erie station WSEE, and the usual first tropos WBNX, WVPX) are ghosted.

11:30am Cleveland starting t come in, WFMJ rf33, WVPX rf22, WBNX rf17, still getting the others.

12:00 WNEO rf45, CFPL rf 10 trying to come in, I have ZERO LOS to this so it's a rare one for me.

steelota The giant red blob is so close. Some of the signal paths are over 1000 miles in that area. I see some contributors on the rabbit ears site are catching 600+ mile stations tonight. I've had some really weak Indiana stations come in tonight. So maybe, we'll get lucky!

steelota 8:40 pm New WLNS Lansing RF14 VC6 I wasn't expecting anything tonight but caught this on its new transmitter.

Zank Frappa Forgot to add, when I got WOIO/WUAB the other day I noticed they were broadcasting Bounce on 2 channels, with 43-2 having the call sign "Circle", which is a diginet that will premier in the new year. I can't see it lasting very long, all these country and western sort of programming seems to die a quick death or end up as fodder on low power transmitters.

Zank Frappa Eastern tropo kicking in now, WTVH rf47 Syracuse, WKTV rf29 Utica.

10:00am WSYR rf17

10:30 Picking up something on rf9 pointed at Syracuse, anyone know what it is, not resolving at 16dB.
