HowardDoin They’ve put up a red header on their website redirecting people to their online feed......I would have thought there would be some sort of redundancy plan in place for a major broadcaster.

Anyways...

Inglewood The other interesting thing for WNY is that WIVB/WNLO is not being carried on DirectTV because of a dispute...they will probably move quick in fixing this as I'm sure some subscribers have been using OTA during the dispute to watch CBS/CW

Inglewood Just checked my setup - nothing on WIVB/WNLO...hope it is back up for the football on Friday night.

They are having a few problems - still not broadcasting at full strength before this issue either. Maybe they can get both fixed...

majortom yeah thinking the severe thunderstorm must have knocked out one of their encoder paths out to the TXMTR.
TXMTR is up, just all NULL PIDs in the mux when I looked at it on my computer.

HowardDoin Woke up this morning to see no picture on all the 4s (wivb) and 23s(CW). Did a rescan and they didn’t populate. Checked another tv, same result. Anybody else seeing the same?

Inglewood I'm running 2 4-bays just outside of Ridgeway. Different location, however, it was what is necessary to get both Buffalo and Toronto channels clearly without a rotor.

If you want to play around with antennas/amplifiers, I find The Source on Morrison at Dorchester doesn't ask any questions when you return something. I've played around with a bunch of OTA stuff from them until I found out what worked well.

You should also be able to pick up 41.1 (Global) easily in Niagara Falls as well.

2.1 is broadcast very south of Buffalo (Springville) and it will be the hardest major network for you to get, but shouldn't be a problem with the right equipment.

9.1 is on the VHF band, and you may need a specialized VHF antenna to pick it up - I pick it up often though only using a UHF antenna.

51.1 is another difficult one - it is located near Batavia (between Rochester and Buffalo) - I find it easier some nights to pick up the majors from Rochester over this channel.

Single or Double Antenna Suggestions

I have a roof mounted 4 element antenna facing east (looks like a CM4221-HD but without the reflector).
The feed enters the house to a central location in the basement and is split feeding 2 LED TV's.

Waiting for me at home is a Tablo 4 Tuner DVR that I'm excited to install which will eliminate the need to split the signal.

TV Fool

I currently get with solid signal;
4.1 (& subs)
5.1
7.1
11.1
17.1 (& subs)
19.1
23.1 (& subs)
29.1
36.1 (& subs)
40.1 (& subs)
67.1 (& subs)
and a few others that I don't think we watch

I have difficulty with (and really want);
2.1 (& subs)
9.1
51.1 (& subs)

I'm currently looking to replace the antenna to gain some channels that I would like to get.

I'm testing an Eaglestar Pro 53-6165VA currently, but so far the results are a worst signal then the generic 4 element I have now. Because of the midpoint between Toronto and Buffalo I was thinking a dB8e or two 4 bays (either dB4e or CM4221-HD). I will attempt to take pictures and add to this post to show what my line of sight is.

Inglewood Let us know how your reception works out for the non-Buffalo channels. The Buffalo channels will come in with no issues for you.

If you point your antenna directly north, following Ridge Road's path, that would be the direction for the Toronto channels off the CN Tower. You should get CBC, TVO, and SRC easily. The challenging channels will be (in order of easiest to hardest): Global, Omni 1, City, Omni 2, CTV. CTV has a strong signal, but may need a VHF antenna to pick up. I didn't bother getting a VHF antenna as CTV just airs mostly U.S. shows you can get on the Buffalo channels, and anything else they have (shows like W5, Amazing Race Canada, other Canadian stuff) is online immediately after it airs for free.

If you aim your antenna between Ridge Road (north) and Nigh (west) you will be able to get CTV2 from Fonthill (repeater of Barrie) and possibly CTS (religious channel from Hamilton). You will not get CHCH as it shares (for now) a frequency with a religious channel in Buffalo. The only thing I watch on CHCH is the news, which they have available as a live feed online, or available to watch after it airs (they usually take hours to post the 6pm news after it airs though).

Good luck with your setup - anything you miss from cable/satellite has a place elsewhere that the group can find you.

bruxus Great reading your post .Most informative .I just live north of the high school, on Ridge rd. N.
I am going OTA ,had Cogeco, now Shaw sat. Fed up with the money and lousy satellite reception that they
tried to fix 3 times.

Mine will be on my chimney ( not used ) , hoping to get what you get. I am going unlimited internet gigs
to get enough of the rest , along with netflix. I am open to any suggestions.

The antenna is the latest version of boosted , and rotates.

A story that aired on WRGZ last night about using OTA antennas in the area.

Inglewood Unfortunately, I do not know any installers. My wife and I did the installation ourselves. We had an old Bell Satellite dish where we mounted the antenna, and used the existing satellite wiring into the house.

I've seen a few guys on Kijiji advertising in the Niagara area, but have no idea what reputation they would have.

From personal experience, if you are looking for hardware, I found The Source in Seaway Mall really good for having decent OTA equipment, and a good return policy. I ordered a few items to try (they don't have everything in stock at the store) from them and had to return them - they gave me no hassle on the return. They are a little pricier then some online options, but if you are unsure of what you are buying, having them take stuff back without question was good while I learned what worked best for my setup. I tried a few amplifiers before settling on a CM-7778 for my setup near Ridgeway.

jrbilodeau Awesome. Thanks for the info.

Any recommendations on installers around welland?

Inglewood I think you should be able to pick up the following channels missing from your list:

WPXJ - UHF 23, Virtual 51 - ION network from Batavia, NY (6 Channels Total)
WBXZ - UHF 17, Virtual 56 - Independent networks from Buffalo, Low Power but you are picking up 39.1 which is just as hard to get. (8 Channels Total)

That's an additional 14 Channels.

You may also get Erie, PA channels if you have your antenna point that way. I can easily pick up the main networks (CBS, NBC, ABC) and sub-channels from Erie. FOX and PBS are a little harder to get.
