eljay Toy Story 4 - With a week to spare between her kindergarden orientation day - during which she literally made a new friend named Forky - and the first day of school, Bonnie's parents take her, Forky, Woody and several more toys on an RV road trip. For Woody, the trip turns out to be considerably more challenging - and, ultimately, rewarding - than expected.

Comments: Although this was an entirely unnecessary movie that fell a bit shy of being as good as its precursors, it was well-written and full of both wonderful and amusing moments. The perfectly-creepy Benson dolls were definitely one of the highlights.

smallmj We've been watching Grimm on Amazon Prime. Just about to start the sixth and final season.

Nothing fantastic, but a stupid fun watch if you don't mind soap opera like twists and turns.

eljay John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum - Elite assassin John Wick has been excommunicated and is on the run after killing a man on the hallowed grounds of the Continental Hotel. Every hit-person in the world is out to kill him...which means that an extraordinary number of people will die before too long.

Comments: As expected, JW3 was a lot more than JW2 and - like JW2 - it was a lot less than JW. The numerous fight scenes were overly-long, repetitive and boring - a violent, graphic and bloody way to turn a thin story into a two-hour movie. I won't be watching JW4.

wmjfoley85 Thanks @Dr.Dave I ended up buying all 9 seasons from iTunes.

Dr.Dave @wmjfoley85 FYI Everybody Loves Raymond will be streaming on the Comcast/NBC Peacock streaming service in the U.S. in 2020, although the press release indicates it will be non-exclusive. Regardless, streaming rights are licensed for a fixed number of years and are subject to renewal at the end of the contract, so you can't guarantee a particular program will be on a given streaming service forever.

wmjfoley85 I subscribed to CraveTV just for Everybody Loves Raymond but with Disney Plus coming o I decided to buy the whole thing on iTunes instead. I own them all now so I occasionally like to watch an episode.

Jack Irish

Have just burned through 3 movies and 2 seasons of Jack Irish, made by ABC Australia.
If you like Aussie dramas you might like these.
Based on the novels of Peter Temple.

eljay Shazam! - In desperation, a dying wizard transfers his powers and purpose to an unlikely successor - troubled foster kid Billy Batson. A mention of the wizard's name now transforms Billy into the mighty Shazam! His first challenge is to understand and harness his new powers. His second challenge is to defeat the combined evil forces of Dr. Sivana and the Seven Deadly Sins. His third - and perhaps greatest - challenge is to accept his new family.

Comments: It had its moments - some of them amusing, some of them more serious - and, overall, was fluffily enjoyable. Better writing and less of Freddy Freeman's smartass sarcasm would have helped make it a much better movie.

wprager We're on S3 of Bosch. Very good. Before that we watched Another Life. Don't bother.

There is a Russian version of Humans called "Better than Us" (actual title is actually "Better than Human"). Only watched one episode so far. Surprisingly high quality.

eljay Alita: Battle Angel -
I found her in the dump under Zalem town
Such a lovely girl from her chest to crown but no feet-a
N-o n-o feet-a

I took her back home and I made her my kid
She asked for a name and my paternal voice said "Alita"
Ali-ta, Ali-ta, A-A-A-Ali-ta

Well, I'm just a post-apocalyptical guy
Who thought that fatherhood was worth another try
Oh, Ali-ta, A-A-A-Ali-ta

Well, I'm not dumb and that's why I'm afraid
Of her nano-tech body that's U-R-M made
Oh, Ali-ta, A-A-A-Ali-ta, A-A-A-Ali-ta

Well, she kicked some ass and fell in love
Then word came down from up above
She picked a fight with head of Zalem's lot
He said, "Little girl, let me see what you got."

Well I'm not the world's optimistic-est guy
But when I looked in her eyes
Well, I almost felt for poor Nova
No-no-no-no No-va, No-no-no-no No-va
No-va, No-no-no-no No-va, No-no-no-no No-va

He made her so sad
She killed all his men
Then tried out again
Motorball she would win
Then he looked at her and she at him

Well, that's the way that it ended today
But a sequel means it won't stay that way
Oh, Ali-ta, A-A-A-Ali-ta

Cy will be borgs and borgs will be cy
It's so mixed up, muddled up, makes me cry
But not Ali-ta, A-A-A-Ali-ta

Well, I don't know what is next for me
'cause I've always been just what I wanted to be
Alita smiled, slapped me on the back
She said, "Daddy dear, let me make you a snack"

Well, I'm not the world's most fatherly dad
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a dad
To my Ali-ta, A-A-A-Ali-ta, A-A-A-Ali-ta
Alita, A-A-A-Ali-ta, A-A-A-Ali-ta
Alita, A-A-A-Ali-ta, A-A-A-Ali-ta

(with apologies to The Kinks)

Comments: Terrific CGI, mediocre story, cringe-worthy dialogue and characters.

eljay The Breakfast Club - Five students spend a Saturday in detention and inexplicably acquire some respect for each other.

Comments: It might have been enjoyable as a teen back in the '80s but I didn't find it to be particularly good or well-written.

eljay This Is the End - While Jay Baruchel is in L.A. visiting his friend Seth Rogen and attending a party at James Franco's house, the Apocalypse unexpectedly happens.

Comments: Crude and silly but, overall, amusing and entertaining.
2019-07-12 10:17 PM
eljay Jaws - As the quiet beach town of Amity Island gears up for its annual influx of tourists, a great white shark settles into the neighbourhood and starts wreaking bloody havoc.

Comments: Despite showing its age, this remains a well-made and entertaining suspense flick with a favourite classic scene (and line) that packs as much punch as ever.

eljay Us - The Wilson family's quiet cottage vacation is disrupted by violent doppelgangers who invade their home, take them hostage and act very strangely.

Comments: The movie started off well but once past the first act it became a goofy and incomprehensible mess. Highly disappointing.

smallmj Recently finished series 6 and 7 of Death in Paradise on Prime. Fun little show, but very by the numbers. I have to admit that I fell asleep during more than one episode. I do enjoy Danny John Jules.

Started Bosch on Prime. I'm very impressed, and not falling asleep for this one.
