classicsat The 505 will not receive channels that are MPEG4. That means all of G1, and a handful of other channels.

It can be configured to use the X-Ku LNBF and still receive what it used to. Set for XKu, it will get the new channel list.

Obsolete is relative. I use mine as a source for my TiVo to record.

bpsmicro I believe all the new channels on the new satellite are MPEG4-encoded, and the older models won't decode those. So your old receiver will "work" (and indeed I still have a 505 in operation here), but it'll only get the same channels that it gets now.

Most, if not all new channels will be MPEG4-encoded, and a lot of existing channels will be converted or dropped. So eventually, the older receivers will become totally obsolete.
SD will offer you a new 600 receiver for $50, or a 630 PVR for, I believe, $250.

Brad.

G1 compatible with Shaw 505 receiver

Will my Shaw 505 receiver receive signals from the new G1 satellite with the new LNB installed or is the 505 now obsolete?
