External Drive OK after 630 restart

My wife told me that she was watching a recorded show on the 630 while cruising the guide. The 630 went into re-start. All well after that. The point is that the external drive remained or re-connected with the 630 without the user noticing.

k801809 Ah, I should have clarified - hot plug is enabled only after the drive is formatted to the receiver. A reboot would be required for initial setup, then you're good to go.

RuralRouter Interesting. When I connected my new 1 TB external hard drive to the 56.05 PVR630, the connected HDD did not cause the 630 to notice. I held down the 630 on/off button to restart the 630. After it restarted, a screen appeared to notice the HDD and went on to format the drive.

k801809 Yes, hot plug support was added in the software release just after the launch of External Hard Drive support, back in 2012. One of my first software release deployments!

Does firmware 56.05 support eSATA hotplug

I was unable to find the original post regarding eSATA hotplug. I did find an old text shown below that referenced the original post.

I wonder since we get the occasional Hydro One power failure.

Does the current firmware release 56.05 support eSATA hotplug?
Maybe this is not relevant to my concern about the reboot of the receiver at maybe not exactly the same time the external hard drive reboots. This is a concern when we go on vacation and expect the recordings to work as expected.

"eSATA hotplug is not supported in this release, meaning the receiver must be rebooted if a drive is connected or disconnected."

What kind of drive would be used to replace the 630 internal drive?

RuralRouter I have an unlimited warranty on the 630. Bad news to hear that the recordings on the external drive will go away if the internal HDD dies.

External Drive Works Fine - Needed 630 Restart

I appreciate the input from ipabrewer about his external hard drive.

It took less than a week to get my 1TB external hard drive from It was shipped from a USA Amazon location very near Detroit.

It seems to work fine; I recorded a show and it played back just fine. I was amazed that the drive was formatted by the DVR630 in just a minute. The new software update may be the reason.

I left the 630 on, but not recording anything. After connecting the eSATA and power, I used the ON/OFF switch on the drive to turn it on. No reaction from the 630.

After I pushed and held the 630 power button down, the flashing lights on the 630 reacted normally for a restart. Soon the expected Shaw Direct notice popped up to ask my OK to format the new drive. Binggaddy Ding. Perfect.

I'll stick with the 630 because I would miss the time display and the other display uses it provides versus the 830. I hope Shaw Direct keeps them in stock as re-furbs as long as possible for the inevitable internal HD failure.

k801809 No, there isn't an eSATA port on the 830, just the USB for external drive support.

Dr.Dave @RuralRouter an HD Mpeg-4 channel is about 6 Mpbs, so faster speeds won't make any difference.

The following quote is from an article comparing eSATA and USB. Quite interesting when discussing DVR write speeds. The article is 9 years old. Maybe eSATA is the way to go for DVR per the article. Does the 830 (like the 630) have an eSATA port?

... USB(3) tends to be about 20% faster than eSATA at reads, while eSATA was about 20% faster at writing data to the disk.

Check item#7 for full information on the 830 user guide at

I am surprised that the 830 uses a USB2 port since USB3 ports are backwards compatible.
The 630 uses the eSATA port.

Supported external hard drives must:
•Be connected via USB: Your HDPVR features a USB 2.0 port, but USB 3.0 drives are also compatible.
•Be Externally Powered: Some 2.5" external hard drives may only be USB powered. You must select an external hard drive that comes with its own power supply that plugs into a regular wall outlet. Supported external hard drives should:
•Be rated for PVR or DVR Usage: Hard drives rated for PVR or DVR usage are specifically designed to be quieter, run cooler, and support multiple HD streams being recorded or played back at the same time. They're also made for 24/7 usage, making them the most reliable choice for your HDPVR.

7B. Setting Up Your External Hard Drive
1.Connect the USB cable (it should be provided with the drive you purchased) from the external hard drive to the port labeled "USB" on the back of your HDPVR.
2.Connect the power cable from your external hard drive to a power bar or wall outlet.
3.If your external hard drive has a power switch, turn it on now. Ensure the power or status light illuminates.
4.A setup wizard will guide you through the process of formatting the external hard drive for use with this satellite receiver. This will remove ALL data and partitions on the external hard drive.
5.Formatting will complete within a few seconds and you will be alerted that your drive is ready for use.

I bought the eSATA Drive

I ordered the eSATA 1TB hard drive this morning from The webpage said 1 left - now zero left ;-)

I expect to enjoy the added capacity and I hope this device will have a longer lifespan than my old doorstop external hard drive and power supply.

Now I hope that the 630 itself will keep working and Shaw Direct will again replace it with another 630 when it eventually dies - free warranty.
