I think just about any antenna (even with a unity gain) on a roof would be enough to get you good reception.

Anyone have experience with this kind of thing without using an amp?
i.e. external antenna just translates to internal antenna?
My house is pretty much a Faraday cage and it's not looking like I'm going to get around to removing the aluminum exterior any time soon - but not looking to throw down $500 just to avoid having to walk towards a door/window to get a good signal.
I don't think an amp is necessary, as I can get pretty much full bars outside, which drops to 1-2 the second you walk in the door, and of course 0 bars to no signal in the basement.
(regardless of carrier - that's why I've determined it's the house dampening signals vs just my carrier being AWS and struggling with indoors)

Anyways, can you recommend a parabolic antenna (provide a link please) that would work with an AWS repeater?

|ScaryBob||Parabolic antennas are typically better than yagis but a bit harder to aim. (Think satellite dish vs TV antenna. The satellite dish picks up a much weaker signal from much farther away than TV yagis.) The bigger the dish the better but too large may cause wind problems. I would get the largest, practical parabolic and aim at the closest tower.|

wide band yagi
I was in the same position as you had good luck ordering a 18dbi gain yagi for my rocket hub which was for 850 900mhz band rogers uses and bought of ebay with great results 10bm signal increase which is very good , although aws 1700/2100 different bird as with wind i bought a 10bi wide band yagi with white dome en closer (common on country roofs) but not good gain as it covers to wide of the cellular band 800-2100 ..found a guy that had good luck using a wifi grid antenna with the proper connections and conversion antennas are n-male cable lmr 400 with nfemale then to what ever your 3g device takes, so this 24dbi wifi gird antenna gave him a 2 bar increase a 4 miles..thats the best i have seen without a repeater involved so check google on external wif grid antenna for aws cellular.

You'll want a yagi if you want to focus on one distant site. An omnidirectional antenna will pick up anything in the area from any direction, if it's strong enough. Yagis also give you more gain, at the expense of needing to be carefully aimed at the distant site.
I'm not clear if you can get an 18 dB gain (it'll depend on the antenna, the signal strength at the distant site, its signal strength at your site and the length of cable between the antenna and your repeater).

Cellular Repeater Antennas
I'm a Mobilicity subscriber in Brampton, Ontario and I have a question about cellular repeaters. Specifically about the external antennas.
I'd like to know which antenna will give me the highest gain. I'm being overloaded with all this information out there about Yagi antennas, Omnidirectional antennas, and Parabolic antennas.
I've read so many pages out there and each tells me something new, but I'm just not getting enough information to make an informed decision. I'm obviously on the AWS band and I need to know which outside/external antenna will give me the greatest gain.
The closest cell tower is like 5 km away but I'm looking for a strong antenna; something that will allow me to aim it at a cell tower slightly further away, because there are 2 towers in the other direction which is like 8 km away so I figure 2 towers are better than 1.
Can somebody please recommend an antenna with high gain for me???? By high gain, I mean at least 18 dbi.
