57 Just as an FYI, we do have a sticky for discussing programming and pricing.

We also have a G1 channel speculation thread.

This thread is supposed to be about the launch and final positioning. It will be closed once the satellite is in place and fully functional.

Snickerdoodles Shaw's not really be in a position to charge extra for the HD version of specialty channels someone already subscribes to in SD when none of their competitors do that. These aren't "freebies" - you're already paying for them. When Cogeco added a whole bunch of new HD channels last year you got the HD versions so long as you subscribed to SD. I really really don't think Shaw Direct will be any different.

Hollywood Suite, the rest of the channels that go with Oasis (e.g. RadX etc) will probably show up shortly after G1 goes live, too. Hollywood Suite will probably cost $6 a month or so. The rest of the sister channels to Oasis will probably be included in the HD Extra pack that includes Discovery World and Oasis. Hopefully they throw in a preview period for all of them.

ExDilbert By many, I assume that the many missing OTA channels and HD specialty channels normally bundled with the SD versions will be included. I'm also looking for a lot of missing channels that belong to specialty packages, such as TMN, to magically appear. Otherwise, I don't expect to see any freebies from Shaw.

LONSat There will probably some that are extra but Shaw has stated many of the new channels will be included with existing packages. It all hinges on what many means.

Regardless, it's premature to say what the reception might be or could be until the end of the month.

Regarding the reason for the relatively narrow footprint, I believe it has to do with the xKu band, which is presently only approved for use in Canada. so the beam had to be tailored to cover as much of canada without significant spillover into the US.
makes sense. I'll update once the new channels/ transponders go live. Once that is a go, the next install I have will tell me yay or nay.

UPDATE: I just was told that some transponders are already active on G1. I've got the settings to set my Super Buddy to be able to get a lock so I will try soon!

Danny001 Not sure what to tell you, the maps I've seen show that the beam will not reach the majority of Nunavuts towns. One of those retailers I install for up here in Nunavut. The beam for F2 is quite solid in Nunavut and even with a 1.2 meter dish, it's difficult to get EBNO's over 5.5, so even if we can catch G1 with a 1.2 I doubt it will be strong enough signal to get good reception. I don't understand why telesat or shaw wouldn't have the exact same footprint as F1 and F2 minus the US, does it cost more money to have a wider footprint?

who cares about the US, it doesn't even cover all of Canada!
How do you know that? Telesat's map only goes as low as +46. With a 1.2m dish and a universal LNBF, one can usually see a +40 signal. Two online retailers are already selling single LNB's that will receive F1R/G1 signals.

Wait until May 29, that's when the standard def channels are expected to be live from G1.

Many thanks for that info,I got the installed upgrade today.
New xLNB and a 600 receiver ,which is nice and small.
The installer was very good,He even updated my old 505 downstairs.
As for the $50 ppv/vod credit I will have to phone them and remind them as it is not always automatic.

stephimoe They need to re-spot beam that new G1 satellite , so it follows the same coverage path as the current two satellites that they use,,,,, & I dont care about the legal reasons of why they cant.

Just DO IT!

All in favor say "Aye"!!!

Hee Hee!

ExDilbert They can keep their PPV credits. I didn't get to use the last ones due to lousy movie selection and technical problems with the few I did try to watch. PPV credits are worth nothing if the service doesn't work. I can rent the movies they offer for next to nothing elswhere.
