willise Since you mentioned Terminal, I assume you are using a Mac.

To get XBMC on your ATV2, you need to ssh into the ATV2. The command is
Code:
ssh [email protected] ipaddress
You should be asked for a password. It is alpine. A warning message should appear asking you to add the IP to your RSA account. Accept the warning.

Then, enter these commands in order:

Code:
apt-get install wget
Code:
wget -O- http://apt.awkwardtv.org/awkwardtv.pub | apt-key add -
Code:
echo "deb http://apt.awkwardtv.org/ stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list
Code:
echo "deb http://mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/atv2 ./" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbmc.list
Code:
apt-get update
Code:
apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2
Code:
reboot
You should then have the Eden build of XBMC on your ATV2

How do I get XBMC on my ATV2?

I am looking at the XBMC instructions and put the stuff into my terminal and nothing happens. I don't even get to the part that it asks me for a password...

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title..._on_Apple_TV_2

It says installing from Cydia or Eden? What are these? The only thing I have done up to now is jailbreak with seasonPass.

Can someone help me please?!

dunlop thanks for the info. last question, any word on if Boxee will ever be done on the new ATV?

I'm tryng to decide between the two. They way boxee presents local files is much more user friendly for my family. I like the ATV2 smaller profile and the money saved

Ham.Clan Yes, Netflix still appears under "Internet" in the ATV2 main menu.
Completely seperate from XBMC.

dunlop I'm totally new to anything related to apple tv.

My 360 that I use as a media extender is about to kick the bucket. When you jailbreak the ATV2 (I would love to have XBMC again), do you still have the ability to use Netflix?

Coop You have to enable the guest account on your pc and make sure it has access to your video files, this will give you a password free set up. I can't remember if you have to do anything other than that but you should check to see it only has access to your local network and not the internet.

Hey Coop.
When I try to use SMP it always asks for a username and password.
I have never set any usernames or passwords on my desktop, so this step always stumps me.
It would be nice to have all the artwork and media information that a movie scrape provides, but it's really not vital.
UPnP just streams so well for me. I've read of some others experiencing issues with quality using SMP, so that too has kept me from using it.

Having said that, the XBMC crashing came back last night, so I will have to figure out how to SSH into the ATV2 to deal with the updating issues. Apparently UpdateBeGone didn't work as well as I thought.

Ham.Clan Maybe I should start a new thread, but now I'm having another issue.
XBMC crashes whenever I try to scrape my movie collection thru uPnP.
Anyone successful in adding titles to the library via this method?

Ham.Clan Thanks for the replies.
I read a bit more on the subject after I posted and ran updateBeGone from within NitoTV, and XBMC seems to be working well again.
I already had the Apple Update feature disabled, so hopefully these together do the trick.

willise If you're on a Mac, just use terminal and SSH into the ATV2.

On another note, I've started to use Plex with my ATV2 instead of XBMC. I find the interface much nicer, not as laggy, and easier to work with. It does have its drawbacks, though. I can't browse a directory the way I can in XBMC, but I've read that so many people are upset that this feature was removed that tehy will be putting it back in again in the next release.

Either way, not having to convert all my videos to MP4 to satisfy ITunes is definitely the way to go.

This seems to be missed by allot of people and as a result some people are updating to 4.3 to stop XBMC from "crashing"...

SSH into your Apple TV 2 using either Putty if your a Windows user or the Mac/Linux terminal

For Linux/Mac users "ssh [email protected]" when prompted enter the password, probably alpine if you haven't changed it.

Paste the below commands, this adds entries to the hosts file that effectively block updates.

Code:
echo "127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com" >> /etc/hosts
echo "127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com" >> /etc/hosts
echo "127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net" >> /etc/hosts
Alternatively you can manually add the below lines to the /etc/hosts file using nano or vi
127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com
127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com
127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net

Or as outlined by other members you can install a package called updatebegone which does the same as the above, however some report that this doesn't solve the update notice.
Code:
apt-get install com.nito.updatebegone
I did both and the update message is gone.

normancw You can open a SSH (secure shell) session on the ATV2 (hostname "apple-tv.local" with username "root" and password "alpine").

On Windows, you can use a client like PuTTY. On a Mac, open a Terminal window and type:
Quote:
At the prompt, enter the following to append the entry to the hosts file:
Quote:
echo "127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com" >> /etc/hosts
To verify the entry was added, enter the following to show the contents of the hosts file:
Quote:
cat /etc/hosts

I was just getting on here to post that my XBMC keeps crashing and look for a solution to resolve.
Habskilla, I'm afraid I don't understand how to do what you're suggesting.
Could you possibly expand your explanation?
Do I have to hook the ATV2 up to a computer, or can I do this thru the ATV2 itself?
Thanks.

habskilla You're gonna want to get rid of that update message. If you don't it'll crash XBMC. It's easy to do, edit /etc/hosts and add 127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com
