I don't think anyone in this group was interested in turning off PVR service.
I like to use both PVR (160 GB) and Tivo (500 GB).

The real problem was that any of the MTS remote controls will control any and all set top boxes (STB) within the same room. I have remedied this by covering the front of the STB that feeds the Tivo with aluminum foil.

Disabling PVR Service

Hello folks,

someone was asking about turning off the pvr service???
It is very simple - call MTS (225-5687) and call up the tv ppl. - they can easily disable your PVR service for those of you using tivo - and you can save yourself $5 a month... but this disables it for your entire house so you would need 3 tivo's!!

Macman davidb1, good call. I've seen that before, and I thought I might have mentioned it, but I guess not!

This happens sometimes even if the set tops are in different rooms, but not far from each other! If a video camera with night vision on it was used to see the beam coming from the remote, I'm sure a lot of people would be blown away at how wide and "bright" the remote IR is. But since it's invisible to our eyes, we never give it a second thought.

I'm glad my new wireless optical mouse has an IR LED, and not the crazy bright red one.

dschell_2000 Well, davidb1, it seems that your pinhole theory may be correct.

Despite my wife having gone downstairs last night when she couldn't sleep, and using the silver remote, when I had asked her not to, all my recordings worked. I will credit having created a new tent of aluminum foil for the VIP1200 for this good news.

I can't imagine any way to put the VIP1200 in a different room. I use both the PVR and the Tivo to watch shows on my new Panasonic Plasma. The VIP1200 connects to the Tivo by S-Video and RCA. I suppose if both these devices were in a cabinet with opaque doors in the same room, and I could open these doors when I want to use the Tivo, that would be one way.

Any way, thanks for the suggestion.

dschell_2000 Thank you, davidb1, for making the effort and writing twice!

I guess I didn't make it clear in my messages, that I do indeed have both recievers in the same room, in fact on the same shelf, seperated by about a metre. As I explained in message #3 of this forum, I have covered the front of the VIP1200 with aluminum foil, so at first I was sure that your analisys must be wrong.

However, I have moved the foil back and forth a couple of times, and if a pinhole is enough to allow interference, then I need to be sure. So tonight I have determined not to use the remote to turn my PVR on / off, but instead to use the button on the front. I did use the "Recorded Programs" button to watch a show. I have also replaced the original foil on the 1200 with a new sheet, folded carefully. The proof will be tomorrow morning, when I will see if the VIP1200 ever went into standby mode.

I'll post the results here.

So thank you for making me check my work a second time.

davidb1 Guh - I wrote a giant post but it took so long the forum timed me out.

In short, it's your Ultimate TV remote causing the problem. Not your VIP1200, the inactivity timer or your TiVo.


I suspect you have the VIP1200 and VIP1216 in the same room, or in a nearby room. When you press the "power" button on your Ultimate remote, it sends a command to the set top to toggle in and out of standby. Also, prior to Whole Home PVR being launched, the "Recorded TV" button if pressed infront of a VIP1200, did nothing, so this seems to back this up as being the cause. -- Why all of the commands you send to the VIP1216 don't get mirrored by the VIP1200 is harder to explain, I would guess that when you press "power" you're in the habit of aiming the remote away from your body and direct at the TV set or set top box - And when you press buttons like CH +/- you hold the remote closer to your body and just aim it in the general direction.

Other thing, unless Motorola moved the IR sensor on the VIP1200 between revisions, it's actually located between the red "record" LED and the menu button, just off centre to the right.

Recommendations:

1 - Tent the VIP1200 like a roast! ensure the entire front of the VIP1200 is covered, this includes the first 1/2' on top, bottom and sides. Keep in mind your remote is just an IR flashlight, so even a pinhole could let some commands through.

2 - If the VIP1200 and VIP1216 are near each other move them away from each other.

3 - If you only use your VIP1200 as a receiver for your TiVo, move it entirely out of sight.

I suspect if you try these things, your problem will go away.

That's not what's happening at my house.

If you have doubts, you can call MTS Tech support, like I did, and they confirmed that, in an effort to save bandwidth, a receiver will go into standby mode and show the screen saver that I mentioned after 6 hours of inactivity. That was before the latest firmware update. They've modified that 6-hour thing to something more random.

Mozza May I suggest using a Universal remote (IE Harmony) and making sure it never puts your receiver into Standby mode?

Provided you STB is plugged into a power outlet it is powered on. the green light only indicated whether it is in standby or actually on. Green light = Actually on, no green light = Standby.

If you have a program set to record it will record regardless of whether the STB is actually on or in standby. You don't have to worry about anything except making sure your PVR is physically plugged into a power outlet

tobe so just to follow up on this......

Say I have a recording scheduled and I will not be home.

Does the green light on the far left of the unit (the big one) have to be on for the reording to work?

Or is it just the small green light in the middle that has to be on?

When I push power both the box and the TV go off, unless I pust the "tv" button first on the remote....

Yeah, it does suck that any remote works any set top. They just rolled out a black remote that is superseding the silver one, but I've found it harder to program already It has a code search, but it's not as simple. Add to that, you have to manually program every new remote to NOT control the set top volume by default. Usually the code search would change it automatically to always control the TV volume.

Yes, I played with a couple of ways to isolate the IR ports. My Tivo has IR blasters, which I taped over the on/off button on the VIP1200 (which is where they've located the IR ports) and then I covered that area with a tent of aluminum foil. This protects it really well, and still allows me to easily get at it when I need to.

I never thought of playing the recorded program while recording it on my Tivo; I hate spending that kind of manual time on a program, but if necessary, I could.

Just got MTS Ultimate last week, so also using the second box to feed
a DVR. I think what I'll have to do is record the program on the MTS PVR
and then play it back on the second box & record it on the DVR while it
plays.

Each MTS box responds to the same remote & it seems really powerful.
Had to put a 2 x 4 inch block of wood in front of the second box to
keep it from responding to signals I only want going to the PVR. Even then
from a really close distance ( 3 or 4 feed) the signal sometimes gets thru.

Haven't used it enough yet to see how this will work out.

MTS Ultimate TV and Tivo Conflict

I've been using a Tivo to record programs, first with Bell ExpressVu, then with MTS Classic TV, and recently with MTS Ultimate TV.

I have 2 receivers - one of them is a PVR; the other one feeds my Tivo. I want to keep this arrangement because it gives me greater recording capacity - 160 GB on the PVR and 500 GB on my Tivo.

Ultimate presents some unique challenges. There has been a screen saver problem (blue screen "Press OK to continue"), which I used to defeat by having the Tivo switch channels to record 5 minutes of programming every 4 hours. Since the most recent firmware update, this screen saver has become more random, and I haven't yet figured out how to consistently avoid it. Perhaps recording 5 minutes at the beginning of every hour would help, but I have seen it start up in the middle of a 2 hour movie recording.

I just came upon a second conflict. Now that we have the feature known as whole home PVR, when some action occurs on the PVR, this shows up on the non-PVR receiver as well, and it leaves the "Recorded Shows" menu visible forever, which then gets recorded over top of the show being recorded on my Tivo. This ruined a wonderful recording of an episode of Life on Discovery Channel.

So I'm wondering if anyone else is attempting to use their own recording device with MTS Ultimate, and if so, how are you dealing with these issues?

For instance, perhaps someone knows how to get to another level of setup which allows turning off the "Whole Home PVR" feature. Also some way of turning off the screen saver.

I live in hope!
