polaris Blocking the data settings will save your money. Probably what I would have done if I was still in school.

bytemonger You will still need to unlock it.

You can sign up for the $30 data plan. They don't care what phone. I had a 1st gen before I upgraded and had it on the plan.

Sorry I don't know FIdo plans as I am with Rogers.

For wifi only you should be able to get them to block your data or leave the Data APN blank and it will not be able to connect.

iPhone First Gen

I just bought a 1st generation iPhone from my friend in the states who got the 3g.

I was wondering, will I still need to unlock the thing to make it work, or will the sim lock be listed as Fido is a supported network?

As well, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to sign up for the 30 dollar data plan, as it is probably just a 3g thing.. but does anyone know of somewhat of a decent data plan for fido?

I'll just use the internet while at school, as there is wifi throughout campus. I've heard some horror stories where people thought they were on wifi or were, but the cell phone still recorded the data and added it to their bill, I didn't really understand this one...

thanks
