Zrock Probably what is happening is every time you power up your modem it is changing IP addresses via your provider and the router needs to be reboot to acquire the address. I ran teh same router and never really had a issue. Maby 2x a year i had to reboot it.. Changing to DDwrt made the router much more reliable and its easy to do

ScaryBob $60 is probably the minimum you want to spend, and that's on sale. Markups on routers can be fairly high so you definitely want to shop around on the 'net. There are often good deals on recently discontinued models. Canada Computers' prices are reasonable but they can be beaten. I recently purchased a D-Link DIR-827 for it's price/performance ratio (before reading this thread.) I knew it's wireless performance is a bit weak but I don't plan on using it for wireless. It's wired to a Linksys e3000 that is set up as an access point in a better location. (That's two $100+ routers to get decent coverage.) In any case, I didn't pay that much and they do the job. (There are better routers out there but at $150-$250.) The DIR-827 is a PITA to configure and it's reliability doesn't seem as good as the e3000.

There are lot's of sources for router reviews. SmallNetBuilder is a good source of information and their reviews are above average. Newegg and Amazon have lots of end user reviews.

Things to consider are:
1. WAN throughput. Some routers perform better for high speed connections and heavy loads. (Multiple videos and downloads/uploads at the same time on a 10mbps+ internet service.)
2. Range. Some routers perform better at lower signal strengths.
3. Wireless throughput. Some routers perform better at any signal strength.
4. LAN throughput. These days it's better to get a unit with 1GB LAN ports.
5. Feature set. Many OEM firmwares are lacking in features. Make sure you get the ones you need. A router that is DD-WRT compatible opens up a new range of features but is only recommended to people who are comfortable with hacking their router firmware.

I have an TP-Link TL-WA901ND that works well. However, it's an access point and not a router, so if you already have a router and just need WiFi, it's great.

Gino34 Well, I went to go check out Canada Computers yesterday and I decided to buy a 50ft cat5e cable and hooked it up last night. Took me about 30 minutes to figure out that I needed to input my username and password in my Xbox 360 in order to get it to work.

When I was there I did see lots of routers and I will definitely come back here and ask which one you guys recommend. Ever since I had this happen to me it sort of leaves a bit taste in my mouth about D-Link.

Do you necessarily have to go spend $60+ bucks to get something reliable? They have some inexpensive TP Link models.

I know everyone's experience with a specific brand will differ....but is there a really good choice for say under $50 bucks? Is there a huge difference with only one antenna as opposed to 2?

This time around I'm going to be making a better choice with your help of course! Suggestions from that link?

Danster If you do a search on the DIR-615, you'll see that it seems to die pretty quickly. It's like too much data confuses/fries its brain. Very weak router if you ask me.

99semaj I'll never buy D-Link again. Nothing but trouble for me.

IIRC, they don't provide enough flashing current when the EEPROM spikes to 15VDC, which means the update process is extremely risky. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

stern_howie I've used that router before.....nothing but problems. Take a look in to flashing it with DD-WRT firmware.....rock solid once you do it.

magnet I have a d-655 d-link, and in the past year I've had to reboot the Shaw Modem about every 3 months while that keeps on chugging.

QuickSilver I had the 615. Moved to a 825. Had that for about six months. Threw it in the garbage (recycle) and bought an Airport Extreme. Have never been so happy in the 5 years I have had high speed at my house. I am on Eastlink Cable. I am a fairly heavy user with multiple streaming from internet, local Lan and xbox live. I will never ever buy a dlink or linksys router again. This is only my opinion.

Gino34 Well, if that's the case, that really sucks. I just got it last year.

Well...there's always the good old reliable cat5 right? I think I'll just head over to Canada Computers and pick me up some. Might be tripping on it once in a while but if it means a reliable connection so be it!

Danster I used to have the 615 as well. Like you, I would get the orange soccer ball icon instead of green. I had installed the firmware but nothing made it come back to life. When I checked how long I had it for, it was deemed pass its shelf life. You might be there as well.

Gino34 Thanks for the link magnet. I'll be sure to try it once I get home tonight.

What I meant by saying "sensitive" was that there's not much you can do wrong with a modem because there's really no settings to change compared to a router's settings which require you to know what you're doing. I just find modems to work alot better or more than routers do. If there's something wrong with the connection at home chances are it's the router. That's what I meant Bob.

I'm not worried about bricking the router.....doesn't seem to work most of the time anyways. Gives me a reason to get rid of it if I **** it up. As for leaving my modem on all day.....it gets really hot. Does that mean it'll end up like my 1st gen Xbox 360?

ScaryBob Seems to me the solution is staring you in the face. Either don't turn the modem off or turn the router off as well.

D-link firmware updates are available from the D-link site. An improperly installed or incorrect update can brick the router so proceed with caution.
