Help switching Canadian XM Radio to US Account.

My 2009 Honda came with a factory XM Radio installation. I purchased a dealer demo, and the radio had already been activated for a 3 month trial on a US account by someone at the dealership.

This caused some complications when I attempted to activate it on a Canadian account at the end of the summer, but it was eventually done.

Fast forward to this week. After a horrible experience with what passes as customer support with XM Canada, I canceled my account and got a refund for the remainder of my service term.

After reading some interesting threads on this board, I decided to try to activate my radio with Sirius XM in the US. I purchased a gift card and called XM in the US to activate an account. I had a friend's US address handy to give as my contact info.

The customer service rep told me that the radio belonged to XM Canada, and that I had to deal with them. From the tone of his voice, I could tell that he knew what I was up to. I didn't push the matter too far on the phone in the event that they somehow "flag" radio IDs for this sort of thing. I really didn't have too much of a back story prepared, so I figured that it was best to beat a hasty retreat.

Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed? Although I canceled my XM Canada account earlier this week, the radio just got the disconnect signal today. There is a chance that Sirius XM's system may not reflect this yet.

Should I just wait a little bit, and call back with a better story... like I've moved to the US to work and want to activate an account there? I was also thinking of buying a portable XM unit from the US and activating that to establish my account... and then try to have the vehicle switched over. I'm thinking that I would have better credibility if I already had an established account.

If I am basically screwed, then I suppose that I can wait it out until XM Canada inevitably offers me a discount to rejoin... and/or the merger finally goes through in Canada as well.

If that's the case, does anyone with a US XM account want a discount on an unused gift card PIN? LOL I never got as far as giving the card number to the service rep, so it is not compromised.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers!

There is a reason why XM (and Sirius as well) customer services sucks... they wish that you would pay them money but NEVER contact them. They pay money to operate the call centre... and if only you'd just use the web and not bother calling them, they would be oh so happy... :-)

Which is a long way of saying: what happens if you set it up online... maybe the computer won't care that its a "Canadian" radio! :-) http://www.xmradio.com/

Hey, I went through the way of buying a portable from U.S.A and added my old Canadian radio. You just have to be persistent with them. I went through three reps to get the service. Goodluck!

From what I can tell through my own attemtps, and what I've read on-line, the XM on-line site won't accept Canadian credit cards to sign up for an account. The Sirius site will apparently... but I have a factory XM in my Honda.

In reference to the first post all you can do is try and be persistent, try and call in again...the story I used was I just moved to Seattle and I only had a Canadian card. As far as i know they can't "flag" any radio ID's and really the CSR shouldn't give two you know what's since it's not really a big deal. (Unless someone from the CRTC was holding the CSR at gunpoint)

I explained the whole gift card thing(which was the method i used) but I didn't read the whole post initially, sorry!

I'm not sure what this means:

Quote:
The customer service rep told me that the radio belonged to XM Canada
but based on the rest of your post, it seems that your error was to contact XM prior to your radio receiving the deactivation signal.

The key element to subscribing to XM U.S. is either do it on a radio never subscribed to Canadian service or if previously activated on the Canadian service, WAIT until the radio is only receiving the preview channel.

If your radio no longer has channels, try again as you should be good to go for a U.S. sub.

I wasn't sure what the CS rep meant by, "the radio belongs to XM Canada" either, but those were the words he used.

My radio had actually received the deactivation signal, but I called only a few hours afterwards. Perhaps this was too soon for the XM in the US's system to update their information. I know it took XM Canada a while to activate my radio on their service because the initial preview period was on the US service.

Another site recommended that I use Skpe to call them to mask my called ID and call origin, but I'm not sure if that is necessary.

Maybe I will just wait a week or so and call back with a prepared story that I moved south of the border and want US service now.

I was curious if they "flagged" radio IDs for this sort of thing just to know if it was worth my while to keep calling back! I've had some feedback that it has taken people three or four attempts to get signed up.

You don't need to wait a week. Go to the Canadian refresh site and see if the system recognizes your radio ID. If not, you're good to go.

Call late at night (before they close) and you'll get somebody offshore. They don't have a clue!

I'm not sure if this still happens but when you used to call the US # from a landline it would automatically redirect you to the canadian lines. When i called I used Skype the first time to be safe and had no issues.

This was only for Sirius, not XM.

New to this forum, thanks in advance for your help.

I am in Canada, i just purchased an xm adapter for my car off eBay and will be setting it up in the next few days.

I called XM USA to inquire about setting up my box.. i lied and said i was American, live in the states but would mentioned i would in Canada from time to time. I asked the CSR if i would still get servicein Canada and she had to put me on hold to check. She came back and told me in order to listen in Canada i will need to register with XM Canada.. I insisted that I am American and would be in the US the majoirty of the year.

Long story short, if i can sign up for XM US will i get full coverage in Canada (Montreal)?

Wink Try Onstar

Just a thought, but you could try Onstar if you have a GM vehicle. When you press the Onstar button, you are connected to a CSR in the U.S., not Canada. They are very helpful and will connect you with the US Sirius 1-800 number.
I can't see a lot of advantage in having a US sub - you get a lot of US weather reports which are of no interest to Canucks, unless you travel in the US a lot.
Of course, it's always nice to be able to give the CRTC the finger!

The advantage is that you have access to best of sirius and there are a handful of channels on the US service that are not on the canadian service.
