Updating Acer Liquid smartphones yes or no?

Hello forum users out there,
It's been a while since logging in here ... I have a question about Acer Liquid smartphones and specifically whether I should or can update the unit with new system/Android code. From time to time I see messages on my phone suggesting I do this, with the message, 'New update Download the latest system update.', but I am hesitant about doing this. What do others do?

The version of Android currently installed is, 5.1 and a Kernel version of : 3.1.65+ dated, Wed Jan 13 16:43:39 CST 2016

I am currently on Rogers as my service provider, so I am not sure if it's a Rogers message I am seeing, an Android message or an Acer message.

Sometimes it's network updates other times the os.. It could be android 6.0 or 5.1.1

I've never had an issue with Android updates. There are important security fixes available so it's probably a good idea to install the update. Be sure to back up your data first.
