I think it largely depends on where you work. If you're working in a government or heavily regulated sector like financial, you probably use email almost exclusively still. Certainly I do.

However, if you're working in a private company, particularly in journalism or many of the tech sectors, you may be increasingly moving to things like Slack and Gchat (Hangouts) as your primary internal communication mechanism.

Nah, Slack is for specialized groups. If I wanted to get in contact with someone who isn't in a specific project group with me, Slack isn't the answer.

Hangouts? Maybe. As long as it's just a short thought/message, or real-time.

I still use email all the time.

I work in a highly regulated sector (military contractor, classified) and for us email is a big no-no because it's too insecure. Even encrypted email is frowned upon.
