The Dialer is one of the best upgrades in KitKat, I believe.
And now there is no need to have real KitKat, an aftermarket ROM (rooted handset) will do fine...

Here is a good description (despite using Apple terminology) of the differences

Galaxy S4 gets a KitKat (4.4.2).
It is Samsung's version of it with all the extras/bloat: 2.5GB unpacked!
Looks streamlined, simpler. Have it for less than an hour on mine.
I think I still prefer the GooglePlay version...

The over the air update was rumored to arrive around the end of month...

I have to admit that 4.4.2 on Galaxy S4 I9505 (European version)
noticeably improved battery life when running stock Samsung ROM!

When I just got the phone, it would never last two days.
Rooting it and running a custom ROM almost made it there.
Now, the stock 4.4.2 ROM from Samsung lasts at least the same (two days just passed)...

So I'm assuming if I take my almost new S4 (on contract) and root it & install custom rom, that I'll void my warranty?

I hate the bloat, and would love better battery life!

eh not realy.. you can create a back up of the stock rom and go back to it if you dont like the custom rom.

I returned my galaxy 1 for repairs after i had rooted and installed a custom rom to it. Just return it to stock before sending it in.

Yes, you will.
But there is nothing that can prevent you from flashing the stock
ROM back and make it look like it was never running anything else.

The bigger problem is the North American version of the S4 - SGH-i337.
It is different enough to make most of the standard tools not applicable.
Especially with the latest 4.3 update...

You can still do it.
Just make sure you use the right tools/ROMs.
If you haven't done this before, spend a few days reading up on xda-developers forum...

When you install a custom rom on the S4 or the S3 (if it's running Android V4.3) then the warranty bit will be flagged and to my knowledge there is no way to reset this bit right now.

This came with Android V4.3 and Samsungs KNOX introduction.
There is a good write up here :

Could be. I haven't looked into that.

Considering how easy it is to flash using Samsung's
Odin tool I always thought they don't really give a hoot...

Cell Provider: Wind

Just got Kitkat 4.4.2 for my Samsung Galaxy S III

Finally that irritating greyed out "eye" in the notifications area is gone.

Note also that the notification area is not in colour.... Interesting change...

FYI The "EYE" could be shut off... Dont have phone in front of me, but it had to do with tracking your eyes blinks to determine if the screen should shut off or not.

^^^^ Ah, that was the point. Smart Stay **was** turned off. The EYE remained. With it turned on, the EYE would change from intense white while watching to dark grey when idle. When turned off, it stayed dark grey, but still there. It's gone now....

One not so bright move was with the battery indicator on K4.4.2. The battery level is shown in white. When the charger is plugged in, it's a black lightning bolt. When the battery is very low, the battery icon is dark grey... Now plug in the charger and a black lightning bolt is against a dark grey background... Not easy to see.... That was better in JB....
