I'm sure Android tablet sales are doing better than before, but even with the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, that seems high.

These numbers are absolute BS and I can't believe anyone would take them seriously!

Fact: Sales of iPad to June 30, 2012 have been 75 million. (Source: Apple Finanancials)
Fact:Sales of Samsung Tablets to June 30, 2012 have been 725,000 (Source: Samsung Financials in court depositions)

According to this poll iPad makes up 52% of market therefore about 150 million units sold. Poll says Kindle is 21% of the market and Samsung is 8% therefore Amazon has sold about 30 million units and Samsung around 12 million.

So Pew says 12 Million Samsung tablets have been sold and Samsung says 725,000 tablets have been sold. My guess is the Kindle numbers are vastly inflated as well. In reality, I'm sure that Apple has an 80 to 90% market share

My guess is that Google is paying Pew a lot of money to conduct this "study" because it's incredible to believe that any researcher with any credibility would cook the numbers so badly.

My biggest surprise is that the Tech press laps it up

That seems quite high. I see a lot of non-Apple tablets now. Especially since last Christmas. In my group of friends it is about a 50/50 split.

How many of those surveyed called their android tablet an ipad by mistake? Took me weeks to beat it into my kids that it is and HP TOUCHPAD not an ipad. Everyone of my friends thought I owned and ipad when they saw it. We have a nexus7 now and my wife and kids still call it "the pad" or "the pod"...
Apple has done a lot right and branding is at the top.

Yes, my experience is also that 'iPad' is now the generic term for 'tablet'.

But, then again, I don't own a 'Samsung' phone - it's an 'Android' phone.

I can't believe that 1 in 5 US adults own a tablet. 1 in 5 households maybe.

Well, we definitely don't hang out with the same people, because I know exactly 3 people who own non Apple tablets (and they're all Playbooks: non Android), and way too many to count that own iPads.

Now, I don't pretend to have my finger on the pulse of the entire world, but I would peg Apple's market share somewhere around 65% if I had to bet on it.

Hugh, are you saying that Pew's numbers are BS, and are repeating them below? Are you putting these "Fact:" numbers as what Pew states? Or are you saying these are the correct numbers?

Facts are Facts and come straight from the companies.
PEW numbers are crap. Honestly they are so over the top that I have lost all respect for PEW.

But that means that your "Fact" numbers are skewed themselves.

iPad sales at 75 million are global sales figures.
Apple reports that they've sold 34 million units in the US.

Samsung's 725,000 units was for the US only. And that was only for the original GT. They count the 10.1 and 10.1 LTE sales separately.
http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/...amsungtabs.png

So for the USA,
iPad: 34 million.
All (10-inch) Tab versions: 1.4 million.

Secondly, where does PEW mention 12 million Samsung Tabs? They don't mention that in their release.

This is Gartner's prediction last year for 2012. I will see if I can find updated numbers.

iOS: 61.4%
Android: 31.9%

Still not 80% or 90%. For the record PEW last year stated Apple had 81%.

This according to a Pew poll out recently showing that, among US tablet owners, 48 percent own a tablet running some version of Google's Android operating system.
I tried, I tried, but still can't comprehend the idea of establishing market figures by asking people what they own. Can someone explain that concept to me and what possibly could be the advantage over reported sales figures?
I bet that a poll of the same type in Seattle 3 months from now will show that Microsoft has 60% of the market.
