Interesting that they don't seem to have named it beyond the "new iPad". Unless the name is still to come, it seems like this will cause some consumer confusion.

Stupid name.

As an Apple shareholder, I've been monitoring it all day. It's currently down $3.

You don't buy a Macbook X or a iMac Y - you just buy a Macbook or iMac and you get the latest version. And that seems to be what they're going to here with the new iPad and new ATV. And undoubtedly they go to that naming convention with the iPhone and iPod in the fall.

It was maybe understandable to have the numeric when the hardware was changing considerably but that pace has slowed down so it seems like they want to just keep incrementally increasing it and you just buy whatever is the latest version.

Even when they changed the exterior casing and screen shape/size of the iMac, it was still just called "iMac".

So now that it's happened, the naming isn't surprising for them.

So next year, the next Ipad will be called the newer Ipad or the newest Ipad or Ipad 2013?

2 years from now, when somebody asks what Ipad you own, oh I have the "new Ipad". Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Most people will call it the Ipad3, I would expect.

That problem must have been solved by now. I bet there had been more than one conversations about what MacBook people owned and I'm sure they had managed to explain it to each other.

It's now bouncing back but still RED. Perhaps it will break even by closing.

Nasdaq is having a good day, up nearly 1%.

The fact that apple is down today follows the old adage buy on rumour sell on fact. Everybody was expecting at least the iPad 3 er New iPad plus more, hype equals stock increase. There wasn't a "oh and one more thing" moment so without something magical the stock is down a bit.

They don't really have version nuns for the iPod so the convention is to use 5th gen iPod or whatever. I am guessing that this will be known as the 3rd gen iPad.

People really underestimate what happened today. The hi-res screen thing is huge. Although widely expected, it's still huge. It will create more demand for Apple tablets than the second iPad. In case anyone has forgotten, the real golden age for Apple in the handset business came with the introduction of the iPhone 4, and it became Apple's bestseller mostly because of its brilliant hi-res screen, which finally made it to the iPad today.
Apple have all their ducks in a row, I don't own their stock, but I wouldn't worry a bit if I did.

Oddly enough, the biggest AAPL guy in our office gave today's news a big "Meh".

In his view AAPL didn't really do anything that any other company can't do or has already done. Faster CPU, better display, etc. that is just a specsmanship game.

Android rocks!

I didn't think the new unit is revolutionary but it continues to keep Apple way ahead of the competition. RIM came out with some nice changes with their new OS but their hardware is now about a year old and, IMHO, they have the wrong screen size for the enterprise market.

Seems a lot like last years refresh cycle...not compelling enough to update if you have last years model, but enough there to maintain their edge over the competition.

I see the markets are back to flat, so the markets aren't disappointed.
