I pre-ordered my 16 GB 4S from Apple at 3:00am MST on Friday. My estimated ship time is October 25th. Looking forward to trying out Siri. Well if my wife lets me, it will be her phone.

Don't hold your breath. Siri will not be available in Canada just yet.

Has this been confirmed that it won't be in Canada right away?

Siri will work in Canada

Quote:
Here's the official scoop: Siri will work on the iPhone 4S in Canada when the device goes on sale here Oct. 14, but there won't be specific support for Canadian English or Canadian French in Siri's language options. (Since the technology is still in beta, it's quite likely support for more languages will be added in the future.)

However, Canadians will be free to choose U.S. English or standard French when using Siri, and presumably it will work fine, barring any regional accents or dialects that might baffle the software's artificial intelligence.

My status at Fido has now been changed to In Progress rather than a # in the queue.

Anybody know what In Progress means? You'd think after 3 iPhone releases the carriers would be able to make this process a bit smoother...

EDIT: According to my local pickup location, I should expect a call within 1-5 days...of launch, of delivery...?

My latest status is now delivery to my house oct 19th. Rather annoying since I was up at 3am apples website was down and I was pressing refresh on iPad and iMac every 10 seconds until it came up so I had to be one of the first ones to order direct from apple.

The folks in Germany started receiving there's on the 11th of October sigh.

Edit:
OK this just in my iphone arrived in
Anchorage, AK, United States 10/13/2011 12:37 Arrival Scan
It then left Anchorage on 10/13/2011 14:38 Departure Scan

So it looks like it may just make it Fingers Crossed getting excited now anticipation is a wonderful thing

Edit 2:
Still in USA my phone just travelled from Alaska to louisville
Louisville, KY, United States 10/14/2011 0:37 Arrival Scan

Can you buy an unlocked iPhone 4s that is not on a plan in Canada by lining up?

Rogers bell fido virgin telus all sell locked phones. The only choice to line up and get an unlocked phone today is the apple store. If you go to their website and look up iPhone buy in store it says you can only buy unlocked by making a reservation. You go to reservations and select a store it says unavailable in all stores ?

So it looks like even if you buy from apple In store at the moment buy lining up you have to buy on a plan.

My understanding is this.

If you buy from a carrier it is carrier locked even if you subscribe to a rate plan that does not qualify for a subsidy. The carriers have minimum requirements for you to qualify for the subsidized phone price. If you don't qualify for a subsidy and pay full price from the carrier it is still carrier locked.

If you buy directly from Apple it is unlocked and you pay full price. Period! You then decide which carrier you want to activate it with and make your own arrangements to have it activated on one of their rate plans. Since the phone is unlocked you are free to switch carriers and rates plans whenever you want.

Interesting on apple website it says "if you wish to buy a SIM free iPhone you need to make a reservation. " http://www.apple.com/ca/retail/iphone/. I wasnt sure if SIM free means without a contract. So is your understanding is your stuck with initially connecting with a telco if you buy in store but you could call them up an disconnect when you leave the store get a new SIM and join with any provider who supports iPhone frequency. Or is it we give you a SIM for telco you choose but if you throw it in the bin that's your choice.

I just checked the Apple Canada web site and things seem to have changed this time around. Previously there was no requirement to make a reservation to acquire as SIM free (unlocked) phone. You could just walk in, buy the phone and off you go to your carrier of choice to get it activated. I don't even think they previously had the ability to activate the phone for you on your carrier of choice. That seems new as well.

Anyway, it looks like, if you want an unlocked phone you either have to buy it from the online store or make a reservation if you want to buy at a bricks-and-mortor store.
